Phillies notes

TY to over ---700,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

Roy Halladay's effort against the Astros is what it's all about.

A true number one shutting down a team that needed to be shut down.

The Phils clinch a playoff berth, will clinch the division within days and should clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs as well.

This is what Ruben Amaro, Jr. envisioned when he built the team. Charging into October – working toward that World Series goal with a clear shot to win it all.

But, they will have to do it game-by-game. The season starts over when the calendar changes.

Phillies and Flyers notes

TY to over ---700,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

This team needs to win the division as soon as possible. The last thing they want to do is flounder at the tail end of the season.

They are going to win the East at some point. But, what they also need to do is enter the playoffs on a roll.
Stumbling, before doing so, won't be productive.

Get it done boys.

Flyers -

This Flyers training camp will be highly intriguing because of the new players.

It will also be interesting to see, as the season wears on if they are a true contender or a group in transition. We won't know for awhile which is true.

Phillies and Flyers

TY to over ---700,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

Hopefully last night's loss to the Astros is not the start of a pattern. The team needs to wrap up the division ASAP and then prepare for the playoffs.

Beyond keeping, or getting, guys as healthy as possible, the Phillies need to rest some tired legs and set the rotation for October.

Flyers -

Ilya Bryzgalov and Chris Pronger are the two obvious keys to the soon-to-start Flyers season.

If both are healthy and play well, Philadelphia has a chance to be among the best teams in the League.
Without one, they are just average. Without both....hope for the next season is all the fans will have.

Phillies set to clinch NL East within days

TY to over ---700,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Brewers showed how tough the Phillies are. Milwaukee has won 51 home games this season, but could only muster that one run victory in the four game series finale.

However, the new 'Brew Crew' (80s reference for old/middle-school fans) is a solid bunch. They have a number of good players and two great one's in Fielder and Braun. Their starting staff is one of the best in the League, after the Phillies and their closer is sharp.

Most importantly - they play to win.

A matchup against this team in October has the potential to be a close series and should not be taken for granted.

Lessons from 9/11....What if tomorrow never comes?

We all paused and then I said: You are right. We should all try to live our lives as though next Saturday is never going to come.

That was the answer that I gave a fifth grade student when he responded to a question that I had just asked my entire class.

Past, present and the future

Part of everyone's life disintegrated when we saw the images of those planes hit New York's Twin Towers on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

My former supervisor Gale and I were in charge of telling key personnel in our company about the tragedy and how we planned to precede. Gale's example showed me how to handle those moments with seasoned professionalism and human compassion.

Working in the business world for fifteen years allowed me to develop a certain view of reality. As time passed, I decided to change course and enter the field of education.

I have worked as an elementary school teacher for the past six years. I fully value all of my students and all of their families. Without them, I would not have my job.

What if ...

There are clarifying moments in life when someone says something that instantly shakes your mind.

One question that I regularly ask my students is this: Why not just live your life in whatever way that you want to all week long?

When each Saturday arrives, all you need to do is think about the good things you did, improve upon your indifferent actions and apologize to anyone you may have wronged. Then, when Sunday comes, just start over again.

One of my students responded to this question in a way that no one else ever did. He said, “Mr. O'Brien, what if Saturday never comes? What if you die in the meantime?”

Students are actually the best teachers in any school.

Beyond time

I believe that everyone in the country and in the world was changed in some way by September 11, 2001.

That historic event occurred on a Tuesday. So, Saturday never came for those lost souls.

Those of us who are still alive need to try and live each day as though next Saturday will never come.

Phillies  -

Just when everyone thought that the Phillies starting pitching staff couldn't be any deeper, Vance Worley emerged.

This fine young, colorful, hurler not only offers good news for this seasons, but the ones to come in the future.

He commands the plate, has mound presence beyond his years and is just, plain fun to watch.

With 11 wins heading into Sunday's game, he has already carved his place into Phillies lore during what seems certain to be their greatest regular season of all-time.

Phillies - Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and the Cy Young chase

TY to over ---700,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

So, Doc got his 17th victory, crossed the 200 strikeout mark, and kept his ERA in the low 2's Friday night against the Brewers.

Cliff goes tonight for his 17th win and has been making a strong charge to the National League Cy Young finish line since his slow start in the spring. He has already crossed the 200 strikeout mark and has an ERA in the low 2's.

There are only two other men in this race.

The field is led by the Diamondbacks Ian Kennedy, who has 19 wins. His ERA is about half a point higher, and he has a lower strikeout total than both Phillies pitchers.

The Dodgers Clayton Kershaw has 18 wins, leads the League in strikeouts and has an ERA that is comparable to Lee and Halladay's marks. He pitches for a team that is out of the playoff race, which makes his performance that much more impressive.

If he gets to 20 wins, Kershaw will make this choice a very difficult one for the Cy Young voters.

Phillies - Brewers series tidbits

TY to over 690,000 readers of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

The Phillies were the better team against Brewers in the interesting four-game series opener.

Cole Hamels was Cole Hamels. In other words, he was great.

Philadelphia won despite the fact that it had half of its regulars in the starting lineup.

Due to injury concerns, it may be wishful thinking to believe that all regulars will remain fully healthy throughout the playoffs.

So, the way the team won in Game 1 bodes well.

It will be interesting to see how the Phils fair against Milwaukee's better pitchers as the weekend moves forward.

Phillies - Utley and their winning ways

TY to over 690,000 readers of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

Hopefully the hit Utley took to the head doesn't create any long-term impact this season. They need this guy, even at the 75% capacity he seems to be playing at this season.

The team is somehow playing through the September rain, piling up wins every step along the way.

Oswalt's effort was fabulous to see.

Madson secured the win and looks playoff ready.

Every team has it's flaws, but this team is very close to perfect.

Flyers - The death of Brad McCrimmon

TY to over 690,000 readers of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

The death of former Flyers' defenseman Brad McCrimmon today was shocking.

He was flying with his Russian Kontinental Hockey League team when the plane they were on suddenly crashed shortly after takeoff. McCrimmon, who had previously been an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, was the team's head coach.

All long-time fans remember him as part of the best-ever defensive duo in Flyers history when he was paired with Hall of Famer Mark Howe in the 1980s.

McCrimmon leaves behind his wife, a daughter and a son.

On a professional basis - he also leaves behind a great hockey legacy:

McCrimmon ranks 10th in NHL history with a career plus 444 mark. Future Hall of Famer, Detroit Red Wing, Nicklas Lidstrom ranks 11th with a plus 429 mark and Howe ranks 12th with a plus 400 mark.

McCrimmon's plus 83 mark, set in 1985-86, ranks 10th in NHL regular season history. That number actually ties him with Bobby Clark and was set during the season that former Flyer Pelle Lindbergh was killed.

God speed Brad.

Phillies - Cliff Lee's Cy Young push and Vance Worley

TY to over 680,000 readers of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Cliff Lee's performance against the Braves on Labor Day was remarkable. He has willed his way into the National League Cy Young award race.

He may need to win-out the rest of the way to win the award. But, this is Lee we are talking about. So, anything is possible. His 2008 AL Cy Young award was his first such honor. He seems likely certain to pick up a NL award as some point.

Vance Worley is the young gun on a staff full of machines. His double-digit win total is not only a nice surprise, it bodes well for the Phillies long-term future.

While it is only one year, this kid might have what it takes to permanently play with the big boys in South Philly.

Phillies - Cliff Lee and John Mayberry

TY to over 680,000 readers of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Give the Phillies credit for having the guts to bring back Cliff Lee. Any other pitcher they would have signed would probably not have had the type of impact that he has. Another extra element he might also add is his upcoming playoff performance.

He didn't fair well against the Giants in last year's World Series, but he also didn't have a Phillies cap on then either.

His amazing 2009 WS effort against the Yankees is the type of 'in the zone' effort this team will need this October.

John Mayberry had shown everyone flashes of being a good major leaguer in past seasons. The Phillies stuck with him, gave him to time to grow and its paid off.

He is just another plus in an A+ organization.

Phillies - September Keys

TY to over 680,000 readers of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Charlie Manuel will be trying to keep his ship on a steady course as his team heads into the playoff waters.

He needs to manage his roster, as much as the games themselves, through a heavily weighted September month.

Balancing playing time for his regulars, innings for his starting pitchers and appearances for his relievers will be no easy task.

A variety of factors, some which won't be able to be controlled, will be in play as this group chases regular season history and potential postseason glory.
