Paterno

Joe Paterno died Sunday after having lived for 85 years.

My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and close friends.

Challenge anyone who believes that they know what was in this man's mind, heart, or soul.

Tell those individuals that they will only ever truly know themselves in this world. If they challenge you about that perfect truth, ask them to prove otherwise.

Joe Paterno, 'journalism' and Penn State

Paterno

Joe Paterno was stated to be in serious condition tonight, as he continues his battle with lung cancer. Reports by some news outlets have 'apparently' noted that he had passed away earlier in the day. So, we will have to see what transpires over the next day+ in this regard.

As we move further away in time from the Jerry Sandusky caused scandal, I can't help but think of how the entire situation represents corporate culture.

Schools that are actually corporations

Penn State, like every other large university and many large public schools, is actually a corporation for all intents and purposes. You can call them schools, land-grant institutions, publicly funded school districts, or whatever you like. But, the reality is that these multi-million dollar entities (as in hundreds of millions, or in some cases more than a billion dollars) all follow the money trail.

ANYONE WHO HAS EVER WORKED FOR A CORPORATION KNOWS THAT ONE PERSON DOESN'T DICTATE A DECISION, THERE IS A CHAIN OF COMMAND WITH MANY LINKS RATTLED ALONG THE WAY.

As such, Paterno didn't decide how the Sandusky matter should be handled. He, like everyone else, was forced into dealing with that unsavory matter. Most, if not all, of people who were drug into this problem were confronted with this  type of situation for the first time in their lives. It was weird and they didn't know what to do, plus the invisible trustees wanted to protect the 'brand'.

If Paterno was so powerful, he wouldn't have been ousted in the manner that he was. The people who did so are the same ones, or on the same level of people, who decided how the Sandusky response was going to be handled in the past.

Sandusky, his family, friends + lazy journalism

I believe that Jerry Sandusky deserves the attention in this matter.

In all directness, the first person who should have stopped that behavior/crime(s) was him. We humans aren't animals. Our developed brains set us apart from those lower life forms and with that Sandusky had the free will to stop himself. He chose not to.

Never let anyone convince you that people don't make choices. Everyone in this situation did to varying degrees.

His family should have done something, as it's impossible to conclude that none of them knew about his problem. And what about his close friends? The responsibility for this situation would then fall on his employer and all connected co-workers.

But, it would be difficult work to track down all of the people connected to this situation. Of course, many of them aren't famous either. It was far easier to locate Paterno, along with the powers to be at Penn State, and then seize on them.

Joe Paterno was never the person most responsible for stopping that situation. He sits far down the logical chain of responsibility in this matter.

By the way, don't forget that most media outlets are branches corporate entities as well and they have their own established methods of work.

Penn State: Unsolved mystery involving missing DA who investigated Sandusky case

***This information is being re-posted because of the high volume of interest that the information contained within this post continues to generate. The original version was first posted on 11/14/11.

Penn State:

Center County District Attorney Ray Gricar has been missing since 2005.

Anytime a DA is missing, a list of many 'enemies' could be considered as potential suspects in what could be a crime.

In this instance - Gricar was the DA who, in 1998, investigated the matters involving Jerry Sandusky that have now become infamous.

Missing hard drive

Gricar disappeared in 2005. His body has never been found since, but his car was found in a parking lot and his laptop computer was found in the Susquehanna river. That laptop was missing its hard drive.

Would someone only keep sensitive information on a hard drive, or would they also back it up?

This speculation doesn't prove, or even implies, that it was connected to the current matter. Right?

Logic

Gricar chose not to prosecute in the late 1990s because he must have believed that he didn't have enough conclusive evidence to do so.

There is no evidence that suggests he was a friend of Sandusky, or was somehow persuaded to overlook the matter.

What is the likelihood that a DA who investigated a case of this nature chose to never follow up after the late 1990s?

What information about that case, or any other case, was he in possession at the time of his disappearance?

Gricar is either somehow still alive somewhere, committed suicide, was abducted and then murdered randomly by strangers, or was abducted and then murdered intentionally by people with clear intent.

It seems highly unlikely that he is still alive.

Suicide? No information about personal problems, mental issues, or blackmail exists.

No, there is no evidence that any of that related to the Penn State situation.

But, the entire argument about why this entire matter has remained a secret for so long seems to be missing some logical pieces.

We may never know what actually happened to Gricar.

But, whatever happened to him and his life deserves justice. And so do his family, friends and colleagues.  (The exact same thoughts are currently being offered for the children who were victims in this scandal as well.)

Flyers

The Flyers loss to the Islanders was the latest in a series of uneven efforts the team has made.

In light of the amount of road games they have played, the Winter Classic 'episode' and the obvious results of the roster changes/fluctuations, they are still a good team overall.

Have to give this team credit for resiliency, it's a trait that I anticipate will continue through the spring.

Sixers

Doug Collins has his guys playing the game the right way. While the Sixers lost to the Nuggets at home was a close one, fans are right to remain encouraged that better days are ahead for their b-ball team.

As time moves forward (as in the next few seasons) all this team needs is a star to make them a true contender.

Flyers

The Flyers host the Islanders tonight in what seems like an endless series of dull in-season matchups with that particular squad. No matter how this game turns out, the New Yorkers are once again out of the running for the playoffs and don't offer fans a reason to go see this game, to watch it on tv, or to listen to it on the radio/online.

Are the Islanders ever going to be competitive?

Flyers

The Flyers handily beat the Minnesota Wild last night. On Thursday they play the New York Islanders, which is another team they should defeat.

While the team has a good record and should easily make the playoffs, the key down the stretch will be to see how they fare against the elite teams. If they are able to hold their own, playoff progress could be made.

At this point, the Flyers appear to be capable of making a true Cup run in future seasons.

This conclusion is very logical and is based upon how their current roster compares to other teams in the NHL.
