NFL

Every blog must reference Denver Broncos Tim Tebow, right?

Here's my take: Tebow shows outward displays of his religious beliefs. That has created a national discussion/reaction because an internal war is currently underway...and has been for a long time.

War? Yes, a cultural turf war between secularists and religious people. Those who deny that aren't being honest about reality.  (Merry Christmas....Happy Holidays....you get the point.)

Many secular displays of emotion are shown every single day within the world of sports. Tebow's display goes against the norm.

Progressives & Conservatives on the same field

Those who claim to value diversity only want that ideological view of the world pushed if it fits their ideas. People who hold a certain opinion about the world aren't progressive, or conservative, they are opinionated.

Nice to label yourself as "progressive" if you think your ideas are advancing what's best for society. My, how much smarter you are than everyone else.

Nice to label yourself as being "conservative" if you think that you are preserving what's right about society. My, how much smarter you are than everyone else.

MEANWHILE...every other human being is in the middle.

There is nothing wrong with Tebow expressing his religious beliefs in public. This is a free society.

Whether he wins, or loses this weekend won't change that fact.

Phillies reach arbitration deal + Flyers 'Bob' should be backed up by 'Bryz'

Phillies

The Phillies avoided arbitration with Kyle Kendrick by signing him to a one-year deal worth approximately $3.5 million.

Kendrick has become a very nice flexible arm in the pen, who can also easily slide into a starters role. He is good insurance and might serve in a more prominent middle innings role in 2012 depending on how other things shake out as the season progress.

Flyers

I'll make this as direct as possible: Someday Bryzgalov might get on track and be the goalie the team needs him to be. Until then, I would start Bobrovsky indefinitely and have 'Bryz' back 'Bob' up.

Flyers

Great news for Claude Giroux and Kimmo Timonen for being named to the NHL All Star team and to Sean Couturier and Matt Read to being named to play in the Rookie All Star game.

All four men are having standout season in their own right.

Did Giroux deserve to be voted in as a starter? Sure, but life goes on.

There are other guys who have played well, but the same is true on all teams and only so many players can realistically be asked to attend.

Flyers

With however the season plays out, one thing is clear - this team generally plays calmly when Bobrovsky is between the pipes.

Regardless of age, or career experience, he has been the team's better goalie this season. The players know that and it gives them confidence.

No one wants to be looking over their shoulder, or looking to settle down the defensive leader (the goaltender) during any game.

Time will tell who is playing well down the stretch and how leads the group into/during the playoffs.

Penn State's Football Future & the Ongoing Sandusky-caused Problems

Penn State

The hiring of Bill O'Brien (no relation to me) is the next step for Penn State's football program.

Regardless of whatever may happen in the courts during an indefinite future, O'Brien will lead a group of young men on the field into uncharted territory.

Who really knows what damage has been done to this University's reputation, or what consequences may be imposed upon their athletic program moving forward.

Sandusky

For me, no matter what anyone says, thinks, feels, or believes, I know that Jerry Sandusky is the person who was, is and will be the most responsible for this entire scandal.

I know that many people have allowed themselves to become overly distracted by all of the other players in this dark sports drama.

Life is messy and not all people are heroes.

Only the self-righteous have said what all of the people who were dragged into that mess should have done. They are wrong and should not be judging a situation that they have never been in.

The most important individuals in this matter were the children who were victimized and their families whose lives were/are affected.

Of lesser importance, were the secondary victims - meaning every other person who was forced to react to the situation....Mike McQueary, Joe Patero, and on and on and on and on.

Eagles

I'll keep this brief:

It's always generally disappointing to watch/be aware of the playoffs when a local team isn't participating.

This weekend's playoff games only served to bring to mind how far the Eagles apparently have to go to win the Super Bowl.

We don't need mountains of analysis to realize that fact.

Penn State: Unsolved mystery involving missing DA who investigated Sandusky case

***This information is being re-posted because of the high volume of interest that the information contained within this post continues to generate. The original version was first posted on 11/14/11.

Penn State:

Center County District Attorney Ray Gricar has been missing since 2005.

Anytime a DA is missing, a list of many 'enemies' could be considered as potential suspects in what could be a crime.

In this instance - Gricar was the DA who, in 1998, investigated the matters involving Jerry Sandusky that have now become infamous.

Missing hard drive

Gricar disappeared in 2005. His body has never been found since, but his car was found in a parking lot and his laptop computer was found in the Susquehanna river. That laptop was missing its hard drive.

Would someone only keep sensitive information on a hard drive, or would they also back it up?

This speculation doesn't prove, or even implies, that it was connected to the current matter. Right?

Logic

Gricar chose not to prosecute in the late 1990s because he must have believed that he didn't have enough conclusive evidence to do so.

There is no evidence that suggests he was a friend of Sandusky, or was somehow persuaded to overlook the matter.

What is the likelihood that a DA who investigated a case of this nature chose to never follow up after the late 1990s?

What information about that case, or any other case, was he in possession at the time of his disappearance?

Gricar is either somehow still alive somewhere, committed suicide, was abducted and then murdered randomly by strangers, or was abducted and then murdered intentionally by people with clear intent.

It seems highly unlikely that he is still alive.

Suicide? No information about personal problems, mental issues, or blackmail exists.

No, there is no evidence that any of that related to the Penn State situation.

But, the entire argument about why this entire matter has remained a secret for so long seems to be missing some logical pieces.

We may never know what actually happened to Gricar.

But, whatever happened to him and his life deserves justice. And so do his family, friends and colleagues.  (The exact same thoughts are currently being offered for the children who were victims in this scandal as well.)

Sixers

Philadelphia's basketball team has rarely been in the news since AI left. Their last real noteworthy season was when they went to the Finals against the Lakers in 2001.

Now that Doug Collins is working his old magic again, expect some very intriguing court action this season and the potential for a lot more than that in the future.

I'm a believer.

Flyers

Briere's hat trick against the Senators revealed many things. Here are two:

1. Danny B. is still a goal-scorer, despite having an off year. If he can get hot down the stretch and into the playoffs (where he has played well in the past) that will help this particular team greatly.

2. The Flyers are consistently resilient this season. They dropped a winnable game in the Winter Classic, eek out a win against the Blackhawks and then snatch an overtime victory against Ottawa. They may have the ability to do a little something in the playoffs, despite the fact that they aren't suited to win the Cup this season.
