Headline Topic: Phillies
1. The Phillies have become one of baseball's elite spenders during the past three seasons.
This offseason they need to make smart trades and calculated free agent acquisitions. Some might cost them money, while others may not. Their payroll space is more limited than it has been in other years, while their positional needs have never been greater.
Then, they also need to retain talent like Darin Ruf. Here is my latest update about on this intriguing 2012 story.
It's challenging to know exactly what Ruben Amaro will do, because his track record is somewhat quixotic. Based on the baseball calender, we'll soon find out what his true plans are. My hope is that he's able to position the team for short- and long-term contention.
