Super Bowl XLVII: Why the Baltimore Ravens Beat the San Francisco 49ers

Super Bowl

(Super Dome image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.)

And my pick was:

49ers: 30
Ravens: 28

I thought it would be a high-scoring game. Both teams combined to tally over 60 points.

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves across the football world.

Any comments about the non-call toward the end of the game rates as pure speculation. San Francisco had plenty of other opportunities to score. In general, if you are relying on a call to win a game, you are making excuses.

The Ravens took advantage early and dug a hole that the 49ers couldn't get out of. That is one way to win a game.

All hail the Baltimore Ravens: Super Bowl Champs!

Super Bowl XLVII Pick: San Francisco 49ers or Baltimore Ravens?

Super Bowl

(Super Dome image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.)

I left off yesterday by typing... "And so the pick is.....
On second thought, tune in tomorrow at this same web site. I've always loved a cliffhanger.  ;-)" Therefore it's time to offer my pick for today's Super Bowl, with whatever that's worth.

As hockey and baseball have always been my two main (equally loved sports), football isn't my area of expertise.

I've learned that we have two brothers coaching against each other today and that the quarterbacks are both good. Ray Lewis continues to seek redemption. A well-liked former Philadelphia Eagle, Wilbert Montgomery is the Ravens running back's coach.

In the regular season:
The Ravens scored one more point (398) than the 49ers (397).

The 49ers allowed far less points to be scored (273) than the Ravens (344).

The point spread for today's game favors the 49ers by approximately 4 points.

Anyone who makes their pick is purely doing so based on a hunch, which can be an educated guess, or simply a a dart thrown at the board. Along with the input of some seasoned family members, friends and colleagues, my pick is:

49ers: 30
Ravens: 28

Do not base your call on my hunch. I don't have any money riding on this game in office pools, or the like. Enjoy what is a great national (and worldwide) spectacle with those who you will be with today.

Super Bowl XLVII: San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Ravens

Super Bowl

(Super Dome image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.)

The parties, commercials, office pools, conjecture, open rants, purchases, preparations will soon be set. Oh yes, the game will be played as well.

My prediction for who will win Super Bowl XLVII is steeped in over four decades of football watching, some on the field playing as a child and observations about the passionate fans across the world who love this sport.

No deep digital analysis, just a pick for who will win, who will obviously lose and the score.

And so the pick is.....
On second thought, tune in tomorrow at this same web site. I've always loved a cliffhanger.  ;-)

NFL Championships and the Gamblers Among Us

For all the gamblers (and other pool players) out there...here's your NFL Championship Sunday fix:

New England over Baltimore

San Francisco over Atlanta

No point spreads, no deep gridiron philosophy. Just the winners.

If I'm wrong, you pay your bookie. If I'm  half-right, it's a push. If I'm totally right, send me 10%.

Recent headline: Inside Access with the Philadelphia Flyers

It was another positive visit to training camp yesterday. The Flyers' organization has always treated me with respect and decency. It is rightfully recognized as one of the best in the city and in all of sports.

The assembled roster for this 2013 half-year is good. Time will tell if this team can have in-season player development among the "youngsters", withstand injuries and also beat better competition during the first 48 and expected subsequent spring session.

Game day, today against the Pittsburgh Penguins, looks to be a nice iced treat.

The members of the Philadelphia media are only seen through their words and media appearances. Behind the scenes, they are a solid collective group of hard-working, talented people. Much as in any profession, their efforts generally go unnoticed (or are not fully appreciated) by the general public.

Working in the media - be it on a FT, PT, or freelance basis, is not an easy endeavor. Travel, long hours, pressured deadlines, etc. are all accomplished by those people who can meet the challenge.

Philadelphia Eagles Risky Business + Philadelphia Phillies' Plight

Headline Topic II: The Phillies

Even a second NL Wild Card might not allow the Phillies to make the playoffs this season. Losing three out of four to the Houston Astros might have killed all realistic playoff chances. So, we'll see what this week brings and take it from there.

In the meantime, I felt compelled to elaborate on a proposed further expansion of baseball's playoff format in today's Yahoo feature:
