Philadelphia Phillies' Trivia Question of the Day

Phillies

There are only two players in recorded Philadelphia Phillies minor league history who have hit more home runs for the Reading Phillies in one season. Besides Darin Ruf's 31 blasts this season, who are those players?

For those who don't know, the answer is found in my Yahoo Sports baseball article that was published today:

"Phillies' Prospect 'Babe Ruf" Slugging His Way To The Major Leagues?"

Eagles

All the best to Andy Reid and his team tonight. This season isn't just about football this year for the Eagles' head coach.

I wish him a SUPER BOWL year.

Sixers

The 76ers new ownership group is incredible. Now that this trade has apparently been made, the team has been transformed from last season's playoff group.

This has become a far more balanced squad through all of the offseason moves. Most importantly, they will be led by Mr. Doug Collins. That great coach is ready to take Philadelphia's basketball team to new heights.

Flyers

The injury that Andrej Meszaros suffered last week (torn right Achilles tendon) was repaired by surgery today. Obviously Philly fans connected this dire dot to that of Ryan Howard's same injury (left Achilles tendon) that happened at the end of last season.

Losing Meszaros is very troubling for this Flyers team. I'm not sure how Holmgren can compensate. Basically he and Peter Laviolette need two of their young defensemen to step up and play well all season long.

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Hockey

Here is a hockey story that all ice fans will like: The mystery behind these 1970s Topps hockey cards is revealed.

How will Polanco handle a bench/platoon role?

Will Hamels get close to 20 wins this year?

Will any bullpen guys, beyond Papelbon, truly distinguish themselves as the schedule plays out?

Phillies

When Tyler Cloyd is promoted to the big club, how many starts will he get?

Will Kevin Frandsen actually be in a platoon 3B mix next year?

If Michael Bourn isn't able to be obtained, through choice or due to money reasons, will another leadoff hitter be acquired in the offseason?

Eagles

I don't really care how this season plays out. Andy Reid has earned something from me that he never had before - full respect.

The manner in which he has handled his son's death has said more to me about who that man is than any football games ever have.

I respect him deeply and wish him the best all around. God Bless him and his family.

Three Philadelphia Phillies' Questions?

Does Jimmy Rollins wish that he hadn't re-signed here and is that why he's been lax again?

Are Kevin Frandsen and Freddy Galvis the potential platoon options at third base if no other attractive alternatives can be found in the offseason?

Will Ryne Sandberg's recall to the team in September be a preview of him being hired as a coach, or more than that?

Phillies' Game Looked Very Familiar

Phillies

Cliff Lee deserved to win last night, but Kevin Frandsen's error allowed an eventually grand slam and Milwaukee Brewers win. Lee has pitched to a record that should be .500.

Charlie Manuel used Josh Lindblom in a situation that he would normally have used Jonathan Papelbon if he really wanted to get the win. However, the previous statement is rather misleading.

If the Phillies had an effective eighth inning option last night they wouldn't have lost the lead. Not having a strong middle inning contingent this season has cost the team many leads and created the need for Papelbon to pitch before the ninth inning.

It was okay for Manuel to experiment with someone like Lindblom last night, because he's trying to provide opportunities for younger players to succeed. That's standard procedure when a team knows (and has known for awhile) that this won't be their year.

Phillies - Are the '11 Cardinals the '10 Giants in disguise?

TY to over ---720,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

The team's recent four game series against the charging Cardinals brought to mind the 2010 Giants. Excuse me, the 2010 World Series champion San Francisco Giants.

No one wants to play a hot team in the playoffs. Sure, great teams beat any other team. But, that great team might be your opponent.

While it isn't October and that might matter, the Phillies should hope that the beat up Braves hang on and are the wild card team.

Milwaukee and Arizona pose their own challenges. Philadelphia doesn't need another strong contender in its playoff path.

Phillies set to clinch NL East within days

TY to over ---700,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Brewers showed how tough the Phillies are. Milwaukee has won 51 home games this season, but could only muster that one run victory in the four game series finale.

However, the new 'Brew Crew' (80s reference for old/middle-school fans) is a solid bunch. They have a number of good players and two great one's in Fielder and Braun. Their starting staff is one of the best in the League, after the Phillies and their closer is sharp.

Most importantly - they play to win.

A matchup against this team in October has the potential to be a close series and should not be taken for granted.

Phillies - Brewers series tidbits

TY to over 690,000 readers of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

The Phillies were the better team against Brewers in the interesting four-game series opener.

Cole Hamels was Cole Hamels. In other words, he was great.

Philadelphia won despite the fact that it had half of its regulars in the starting lineup.

Due to injury concerns, it may be wishful thinking to believe that all regulars will remain fully healthy throughout the playoffs.

So, the way the team won in Game 1 bodes well.

It will be interesting to see how the Phils fair against Milwaukee's better pitchers as the weekend moves forward.
