Philadelphia Phillies: Does Ryan Howard need surgery? + All-Stars

The answer to the headline teaser is one that no one knows for sure as of today (July 6, 2013). What's clear is that Ryan Howard's left knee has been increasingly bothering him this season. Hopefully his DL stint, due to inflammation, will allow him to heal. However, it seems reasonable to believe that continuous swelling could lead to elective (or needed) surgery.

Howard was noticeably gimpy was far back as spring training. As to whether this resulted because he put unusual pressure on his knee, because of lingering Achilles tendon issues, hasn't been revealed. This latest health issue could simply be what should be expected from a middle-aged baseman man.

Brown and Lee

On a lighter note, it's great that Domonic Brown earned his first All-Star selection and right that Cliff Lee returns to the 'Mid-Summer Classic' for the fourth time (third as a Phillie).

Brown's emergence obviously is the feel-good story of this season. Lee continues to be the most consistent left-handed Phillies' starter since Steve Carlton. (And that's quite a comparison for sure.)

Thank you to Stacey Stauffer (Fox 29 Philadelphia). She interviewed Maddie Woytovich, her parents (Jeff and Betsy Woytovich) and me on July 2, 2013 about the latest chapter in this inspiring story. The feature will be shown on an upcoming newscast.

Professional reporters and video journalists are vital in an ever-changing media world. Stacey and the Fox staff were first-rate.

I will be donating one-half of all proceeds from the sale of my soon-to-be-released illustrated children's bookMaddie: Teaching Tolerance with a Smile to the non-profit group: Children's Alopecia Project (CAP).

More news about the book and the story behind it will be posted in this blog as the release date nears.

Blessed2Play Sports Talk Show Has Global Reach

Today, I'm highlighting an update to an interview that I conducted with a gifted broadcaster:

Ron Meyer: Blessed2Play Sports Talk Show Has Global Reach

Ron hosts the great weekly sports' talk show 'Blessed2Play', which is heard via its Ohio-based feed, as well as around the world through EWTN broadcast and Sirius/XM satellite radio transmission and through the show's website podcast library.

This insightful sports' talk show is unique because the guests (many of whom are famous athletes and coaches) talk about their careers and how their faith impacts their lives.

As opposed to every generic interview that you have heard over the years, this show presents the full image of the person behind the name.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed as well. The link to that podcast can be found here if you would like to listen.

What Domonic Brown's Great Month of May Means

Many people wrote him off. Some even thought he'd never last through the end of April. But, Domonic Brown might be in the process of proving that he can be a regular in the major leagues.

After floundering since 2010, everything has clicked for number 9 offensively in May. It's so nice to see this affable young man finally maintain his health and realize the result of the earnest efforts that he's made in past years.

Last season Brown's swing was noticeably steady at Triple-A. While his defensive efforts may never be great, the Phillies' left fielder's glove work is adequate.

No sabermatrician can truly project how long his power surge may continue. But, this 25-year-old is starting to show that he can hit major league pitching over a consistent period of time. As long as he continues to make all needed adjustments, Brown will remain in the Phillies' lineup indefinitely.

Philadelphia Phillies Trades And Future Money Matters

Phillies

The Phillies simply couldn't afford to keep Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence and thus they were both traded.

Both players had undisciplined plate approaches. Victorino was an outstanding center fielder with a great glove and a strong arm. It will be difficult to find a productive, durable, replacement for him.

Hopefully Domonic Brown can replace Pence in right (or maybe he shifts to left).

Amaro opened some payroll space and probably needs to go even further if he wants to come back strong next season. It will be interesting to see if 2013 is viewed as a transitional year, or one of true playoff hopes.

Flyers

Whether Jakub Voracek was going to be included in Paul Holmgren's follow-up deal to the Predators for any Shea Weber signing is irrelevant now.

What is relevant is that the Flyers have signed their nice RFA winger to a four-year deal today. It will be interesting to see how he plays with 'G' and 'Hartsy' on the top line.

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Hockey

Here is a hockey story that all ice fans will like: The mystery behind these 1970s Topps hockey cards is revealed.

Philadelphia Phillies Trades Signal New Era

Phillies

The Phillies decisions to move both Shane Victorino (Dodgers) and Hunter Pence (Giants) confirm that a full-throttle effort to begin a new era has begun.

While move dealing is yet to be done and some potentially dramatic moves could be made this offseason as well, make no mistake about the importance of this date in Phillies history.

Various pieces from the core of the Phillies team that won the 2008 World Series (Howard, Utley, Rollins, Ruiz and Hamels) are still in place at the present time. Blanton is rumored to be dealt soon and Kendrick is also still with the team.

Flyers

Phillies

The Phillies seemingly have to trade some players before the non-waiver trade deadline.

It would be best to create as much payroll flexibility as is possible for next year.
I'm just glad that Cole Hamels will be remaining with the team. Because that situation is resolved any player who is dealt will be okay by me.

I would be shocked to see Carlos Ruiz be among them. Beyond him all bets are off.

Phillies

The Phillies seemingly have to trade some players before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Victorino and Blanton can't possibly stick around much longer, can they?

Domonic Brown seems likely to be seen in Phillies uniform once again if any outfielder (other then him, of course) is dealt.

Flyers

Whether Jakub Voracek was going to be included in Paul Holmgren's follow-up deal to the Predators for any Shea Weber signing is irrelevant now.
