Preakness Stakes' Victory Stops Triple Crown Bid

Congratulations to Hall of Fame Jockey Gary Stevens and Hall of Famer trainer D. Wayne Lukas for taking a long shot and winning the Preakness Stakes. His victory aboard Oxbow stopped Triple Crown hopes for Orb. But, it could set up a nice battle at the Belmont Stakes on June 8 if both horses are entered in that third leg.

Stevens' win was quite a feat, as he rode the fifth longest shot (15-1) within the past century to victory in the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.

Horse racing has long been one of my favorite live sporting events because of the excitement that surrounds great days like this one.

5 Traits of Hardcore Philadelphia Phillies' Fans

Every longtime baseball fan considers himself/herself to be hardcore. In Philadelphia there are particular elements within the culture that helps to define who we are.

I loved writing this one because the exaggerations weren't so far from reality. Those of us who saw the 1980 and 2008 World Series' victories are deeply fortunate and owe an eternal debt of gratitude to every fan who ever lived and never saw either great team.

What a downer
It's not that no one cares who wins today's Belmont Stakes race in New York. But, it's true that a lot less people will be drawn to the show.

I had my own numeric superstition involving I'll Have Another in the eleventh post position. That was linked to the fact that there have been eleven Triple Crown winners in history and eleven horses have gone to the Belmont Stakes since Affirmed won in 1978.

Here is a link to the remaining 11 contenders and their current odds.

With IHA scratched, all I'm left with is choosing the horse in the first post position (Street Life) and the one in the tenth position (Optimizer). That 1 + 10 = 11.  Deep use of logic, right?

For a long shot, I'll go with Guyana Star Dweej, who will be racing from the eighth spot. Doodnauth Shivmangal's choice of Kent Desormeaux  was interesting. Not because he is a Hall of Famer of course, but because of his Preakness suspension. Even a show finish would make for a nice story there.

Those are my top three. Hardly the most brilliant selections. Hardly the most wanted scenario for today's anticlimactic race.
Baseball cards

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Sixers

A one-point victory in Game 2 to counter the one-point loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 1.

As a good friend and basketball fan told me tonight, Doug Collins has this deep team playing tough defense.

Got a split in Beantown. Nice!

Sixers - Celtics Playoffs, Phillies Catcher Ruiz should hit cleanup and Preakness Stakes Contenders

Sixers

The one-point loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 1 could have been a win, but you can't have everything.

It would be best to take Game 2 tomorrow, because it would seemly overly challenging to win four out of a possible five games from a good team like this one is.
Phillies

Juan Pierre has sold me on his continuing ability to get on base and generate runs. He should play in left
field the majority of the time and hit no lower than second in every game.

Carlos Ruiz is having a breakout year. I would like to see him hit cleanup for a few games to see how it goes. He's mentally strong enough to handle whatever the results of that experiment would be.

Pence just isn't cutting it in Howard's spot.

Sixers

Closed out the Bulls on Thursday and open the second round series on the road against the Boston Celtics tonight.

This young team should have the legs to run in Game 1, but will they be able to channel the momentum they have gained into a victory?

Getting the jump in this round would be significant.

Phillies

It seems hard to imagine this specific collection of players being anything more than middling this season.

They have some great players, some poor ones and a majority who are just average. That would seem to indicate a record around .500 by season's end.

Something unusual would have to happen for them to push towards 90 wins this year.
