Juicy Philadelphia Phillies' Free Agent News

My new eBook: Readers Who Have No Time for Words is now available on Amazon.com. These stories were specifically written for people who like to read, but don't have much time to do actually do so. Humor, horror, mystery, adventure, travel, sports and a few selected stories are all wrapped inside this mini-tome. Thank you for considering this download.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Headline Topic: Phillies and Free Agency

1. The news today that the Phillies might be a player in the Josh Hamilton race is intriguing. I don't know if Amaro will be able to beat out whatever other clubs might offer.

I would do this deal for three years max and high dollars. He is a high-reward, impact player who really could get this Phillies' team back on track offensively.

Who knows if this will happen, but it's worth a try.

Recent Headline Topic: MMA Phenomena

I encourage fans of any sport to attend one of these events when you can. The excitement of the crowd and the efforts of the fighters will likely win you over to this superb athletic adventure.

Here is my most recent feature article about a live XFE Cage Wars event that I attended.

Headline Topic: Other Phillies' Moves + Eagles

1. Here's a link to a cool article about potential fourth, or fifth starters the Phillies could pursue if they wish to add a veteran.

2. The Eagles finally snapped their 8-game losing streak by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

You may wish to scan the Yahoo feature article I wrote about what that "victory" really means. The commentary I added about Andy Reid is also heartfelt, as we all know this has been an extremely rough year for him professionally - and more importantly, personally.

Phillies' Trades and Free Agent Acquisitions + Philadelphia Eagles' Game

My new eBook: Readers Who Have No Time for Words is now available on Amazon.com. These stories were specifically written for people who like to read, but don't have much time to do actually do so. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Headline Topic: Other Phillies' Moves + Eagles

1. I like the addition of Ben Revere, because he is a double-plus defender and has speed. The team's lineup needs more people like him in it.

I like the addition of Michael Young, because he should have enough left in the tank to generate offense this season. His defense won't be great, but more like Kevin Frandsen's efforts at the end of last season verses Ty Wigginton.

I don't know if Amaro will add a big-name outfielder, or simply supplement what he has with another veteran who can take the pressure off Ruf and Brown (if he stays).

He also needs to add a veteran middle-innings reliever.

The Phillies could give 22-year-old Jonathan Pettibone a chance to be their fifth starter in 2013. This right-hander posted some encouraging numbers during the past few years in the minor leagues. Plus, there are always a variety of low-cost veteran arms that can handle the number 5 spot in the rotation if Pettibone isn't ready.

2. The Eagles play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today. Beyond that sentence, what else is there to say about this disappointing season at this point?

Texas Rangers' Michael Young Approves Philadelphia Phillies' Trade

Headline Topic: Phillies' Trade

Update...it has happened. (And now onto solving our bullpen issues.)

This deal is for a "big-name" player who is fading, like many of the teams' other core members. However, Young should be a decent offensive player who might hit behind Ryan Howard in the fifth spot if some other right-handed power bat isn't added by the start of the season.

Young isn't a great defender, but can play a variety of positions on the field. So, some runs will be lost when he starts at 3B.

Reliever Josh Lindblom, who had difficulty getting men out after he was obtained from the Dodgers for Shane Victorino, and minor league pitcher Lisalverto Bonilla were sent to Texas in this deal that also has $10 million coming to the Phillies to help pay Young's 2013  salary of $16 million.

Another defeat, to the Dallas Cowboys no less, continues this season's misery. The season can't possibly end soon enough.

A fresh start for this entire organization grows closer by the week. I don't know where many major changes will lead to, but they are coming.

Andy Reid has been a very good coach. We can not say that he's been a great coach, because he didn't get that Super Bowl win. For me that is the dividing line between good and great. Responses to the contrary only come through use of emotional logic.

Baseball Trade: Rangers' Michael Young Decent One-Year Philadelphia Phillies' Fit

Headline Topic: Phillies' Trade

Rangers' Michael Young had more hits than anyone who played for the Phillies last season.

He's not a great third baseman and isn't a long-term solution. Cody Asche will need to meet expectations to make the Young acquisition a smart one. (Assuming Young does approve the pending trade.)

All-in-all, I'm okay with this trade that is expected to send Josh Lindblom and another player of modest value to the Rangers. The Phils are only expected to pay about $5.5 million of Young's $16 million 2013 salary as well.

Along with Frandsen and Galvis (if both stay), Young can be a decent one-year fix at the hot corner.

--->>>Those who aren't okay with this deal should offer some reasonably better existing alternative. Right, there aren't that many.

Now, we move onto getting a veteran middle-inning reliever.
