Philadelphia Phillies Offseason Moves: Trades and Free Agent Signings

Headline Topic: Phillies

With Ben Revere and Michael Young being obtained, Amaro signed Mike Adams and John Lannan as free agents. Both men bolster the pitching staff.

Adams surgery caused his numbers to decline last season, but if healthy he should be as consistent as Ryan Madson once was. That is major news and could mean that 2013 looks far different than 2012 did.

We mustn't forget that the Braves are no slouches and that the Nationals will have one Mr. Strasburg for a full season.

The Phillies should play somewhere between their 2011 and 2012 regular season selves in 2013. If that will be enough to make the playoffs is yet to be seen.

Philadelphia Phillies Sign Two Free Agents

Headline Topic: Phillies + Free Agency

Mike Adams is a decent pickup. He seems to have slowed down last year, which is something that many guys in their mid-30s do. But, he's better than what they had last season and hopefully will be an effective setup man next season.

Lannan is a warm body that throws with his left hand. This was purely a depth move. The fact that this veteran couldn't break the Washington Nationals' rotation last season and spent time in the minor leagues is somewhat concerning.

The Phillies are taking the Nats castoffs now. Didn't that used to be the other way around?

Have the Philadelphia Philles Given Ryne Sandberg Two Assurances?

Headline Topic: Sandberg-Phillies reunion

Okay, the 2012 season is now over. Like all good politicians, the Phillies will now attempt to steer away from a bad subject (this season) and toward next year.

With three coaches being fired, there's more than enough space for Ryne Sandberg to be hired.

I hope that he has already accepted an offer and then doesn't interview for any subsequent managerial jobs. The only way that scenario can happen is if Sandberg has been told that he will not only be a coach next season, but also that he will take over in 2014, or during the season if any change is made.

No one can know what is being said.

I, along with countless long-time fans want this particular guy to be our next manager. I'm not a Charlie Manuel detractor, but I also know that 2014 (at the latest) needs to be Sandberg's time to shine.

Recent Headline Topic: Eagles-Giants' Game

Both teams are 2-1. This looks to be a game the Eagles should win.

Divisional and Conference games matter just as much now as they do later in the season. The Birds can't let this one slip away.

It will be interesting to see how Vick performs in what has been an erratic effort to-date.

Recent Headline Topic:  Hope for Phillies' Darin 'Babe' Ruf

Seeing Darin Ruf hit numerous home runs out of a Double-A park in Reading was thrilling. Seeing him hit his first major league home run, during the first game that he started in left field for the Philadelphia Phillies was priceless (to coin an advertising cliche.)

Will he actually develop into a major league player? Could that happen by next season? No one knows the answers to these questions, but personal stories have always drawn me to this specific game.

Here is my feature article about him.

Phillies' Fans: At Least the Mets Didn't Win the NL East

Headline Topic: Nationals win the NL East

All hardcore Phillies' fans aren't happy that our five-year divisional run has ended, but we can find sunlight on this literally rainy day.

Imagine if they Mets would have risen from the ash can we put them into back in 2007? Then think about how their morally challenged fan base would have reacted last night if that scene at Nationals Park would have played out at Citi Field.

Yes, any glass can be seen as half full if you really force yourself to do it. Now, we should  pull out our 2008 "Perfect Season" DVD's and digitally drown our sorrows.  :-/

Eagles

All the best to Andy Reid and his team tonight. This season isn't just about football this year for the Eagles' head coach.

I wish him a SUPER BOWL year.

Sixers

The 76ers new ownership group is incredible. Now that this trade has apparently been made, the team has been transformed from last season's playoff group.

This has become a far more balanced squad through all of the offseason moves. Most importantly, they will be led by Mr. Doug Collins. That great coach is ready to take Philadelphia's basketball team to new heights.

Sixers

What a great win the other night!

Few would have expected this team to be leading a first-round playoff series against the Bulls.

More than just Chicago injuries, Doug Collins spirit is driving this team. No matter what happens in the series, kudos to everyone on this Philadelphia team that has heart.

Flyers

This Flyers team must score more than the Devils in Game 4.
If they don't, their trip back home might be the last before many to the Jersey shore.
