MLB and MLBPA Discussing 2020 Season - Baseball Cards Timeless Importance

Major League Baseball's current discussions with the Major League Baseball Players Association about the proposed start of the 2020 season are beginning. My old baseball cards are once again in mind as a result...

St. Louis Cardinal Albert Pujols has hit over 400 home runs, but has never hit more than 49 in one season. Alex Rodriguez, who is in sixth place on the all-time home run list, was traded by the Texas Rangers to the New York Yankees in 2004. In 2010, Roy Halladay pitched a perfect game and a playoff no-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies.

All of the information shown above is easy to access through any baseball website, could be shown on a number of cable television sports programs, or heard on a variety of sports talk shows. But, back in the day, baseball fans learned that type of information through newspaper box scores, magazines and on the backs of baseball cards.

Finding your favorite players
My elementary school friends introduced me to baseball cards in the 1970's. During that pre-internet, pre-video game era, those thin, rectangular encyclopedias were our passion.
While complete sets could be ordered through Topps, it was so much more fun to buy packs at local convenience stores. Opening the wrapper, smelling those pink gum-scented cards and earnestly looking for our favorite players was thrilling.
Local card shows, which were similar to farmer's markets, offered another collection building option. A kid convention filled with a buffet of bubble gum cards. Instead of testing the tomatoes, you looked for that Tom Seaver who was sorely needed to complete the Cincinnati Reds team set.
Those events were nothing short of paradise.
Trading
The free market is a wonderful thing and we had no summer trade deadlines. Duplicates of a Ron Guidry, Catfish Hunter and Thurman Munson could be just the incentive that was needed to obtain the Oakland Athletics' Reggie Jackson card my buddy finally was willing to deal in September.
If there were any disputes about the balance of a deal, Becket's Baseball Card Price Guide was used as a silent arbitrator. We didn't know who Beckett was, or how he determined the card values, but using his book made us feel like we were operating on the up and up.
Proper Storage
Like fine wine, all cards needed to be properly stored. Plastic cases, with individual slots for each team, had to be obtained through the use of accumulated allowance money. Price was no object, as $8 was well worth the investment.
From there, the bedroom closet served as the primary storage vault. As part of a mental fire drill, if the house ever went up in flames, I would grab the dog along with my baseball card boxes and head out the side door to safety. Let the homework burn.
Bygone days
Baseball cards are still available today in larger chain stores, in specialty hobby shops and at card shows. They also continue to hold a spot in the hearts of all who learned to love the game through them.

Spring Training 2020 - Classic Post: When Baseball Cards Were King

Here's a classic post that I wrote about a favorite childhood hobby. It's fitting to re-read as the first games of spring training 2020 get set to begin...

Philadelphia Phillies: Roy Halladay and Carlos Ruiz to be traded?

We are more than 10 days away from the waiver trade deadline on August 31. If all goes well Roy Halladay could start for the Phillies this Sunday. If he performs as expected it's still possible that he could be traded.

Carlos Ruiz' bat has shown signs of life. He's clearly another trade candidate, due to his also expiring contract.
While both men would have to clear waivers, the idea of either being traded isn't certain. It's also not a stretch.

Those who have been following the blog posts about my writing efforts know that my illustrated children's book has taken time and patience to create and produce.

After successfully reaching a fund-raising goal, we are now set to release our book Maddie: Teaching Tolerance with a Smile!!!

This book is about the life of Madison Woytovich and the organization CAP (Children's Alopecia Projectthat her father Jeff Woytovich founded a number of years ago.

Three other people also share in the creation of this book:

Maddie's mother, Betsy Woytovich, served as an excellent editor. Her support was invaluable.

Patrick O'Brien (who is my cousin) was the initial artist who established the visual reality that became Maddie: Teaching Tolerance with a Smile. Without his generous contributions, ongoing advice and support, this book might not have been born.

Melissa Lascala (who served as my main illustrator) offered a sincere creative presence that saw this project through to completion.

-->>>50% of all proceeds from this book will be donated to CAP.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you to Stacey Stauffer (Fox 29 Philadelphia). She interviewed Maddie Woytovich, her parents (Jeff and Betsy Woytovich) and me recently about the latest chapter in this inspiring story. The feature will be aired during the 10 p.m. broadcast on July 30 (which is the date of today's post).

-->>Here's a video link to Stacey's wonderful feature.

Professional reporters and video journalists are vital in an ever-changing media world. Stacey and the Fox staff were first-rate.

Boston Marathon Bombings: The Terrorists Want Us To Fight Each Other

(Photo courtesy of ESPN, via the Richard family)

The photo shown above is Martin Richard. He was eight-years-old when he was killed by terrorists in Massachusetts on April 15, 2013 at the Boston Marathon.

The bombings, like so many other terrorist acts create rightful emotional reactions. As a human being, I have no problem with that. However, I have had and do have a problem with the manner in which people begin to attack each other after these incidents happen.

DO PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT'S PART OF EVERY TERRORIST'S INTENT? They want to tear whatever society they attack apart by pitting people against each other.

Most, if not all, of us have heard others use tragedy as a weapon to loudly shoot their mouths off about various elected officials (from both parties) after 9/11 and after other tragic events. Those 'personality types' also have no problem attacking anyone who they disagree with either.

I believe that those individuals aren't that far removed, if they are removed at all, from the same type of warped view of reality that the terrorists see.

Let me be clear: Terrorists have no solutions. They only want to destroy what currently exists. That's not a productive political message.

Every person who has ever opened his, or her, mouth about any of our Presidents (including the last one, or the current one) and actually believes that either of those people represent what's wrong with the United States is misguided.

People of goodwill understand that the majority of humanity wants what's best for everyone else. Don't allow anyone to use tragedy to push their own agendas. (And no, that's not what I'm doing in this case.)

My message goes out to the terrorists who commit these violent acts and to those members of the public who knowingly serve as willing pawns in their death games.

Post from 4/15/13
Life in the United States has never been ideal. Romanticizing the past removes the realities of death that surrounded the courageous fight to gain Independence and everything that has happened since.

Every person who has ever shrugged off the removal of established rules within society and common sense practices has been and will always enable problems.

When people live in a fantasy world they choose to believe that there will be no consequences, or are 'surprised' when any tragic event occurs - like the Boston Marathon Bombing.

Always ignore everyone who argues that rules don't matter, that all life isn't sacred and that there is no right and wrong.

And no, I'm not in favor of the death penalty. Instead, I believe that life in prison without parole is the better punishment for all violent crimes.

Philadelphia Phillies: Roy Halladay Looked Good Today

(Photo courtesy of SD Dirk - Wikimedia Commons)

I have been very concerned about Roy Halladay since last season. Seeing him throw so well today in Miami was great. Plus, he earned his 200th career win.

'Doc' is someone who gives his all, all the time. He clearly has been  having difficulty performing his physical job as a middle-aged person. That's something every human being who is fortunate to live into his, or her 30s can relate to.

Continued success is wished to one of the great pitchers of this era. As long as he's able to harness his existing talent he should be able to pitch effectively this season and possibly beyond.
