Inside Access: Oskar Lindblom Wins Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

Per the Philadelphia Flyers media relations staff:

OSKAR LINDBLOM AWARDED BILL MASTERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY

Flyers forward honored with major NHL Award for his impact and return to the ice after overcoming Ewing's sarcoma

The National Hockey League announced that Philadelphia Flyers left wing Oskar Lindblom has been awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is presented annually to the player who best embodies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game of hockey.

"I feel very, very honored and proud to win this award and to compete with these types of players like Matt Dumba and Patrick Marleau that are great players and great people on and off the ice. It's very special for me," said Lindblom in accepting the award from last year's recipient, Bobby Ryan. "Just to be able to get back on the ice again was so, so good and I can't say more than that. It was an awesome feeling to be back on the ice again... I would like to thank my family, my girlfriend, my whole team, the organization and especially the doctors and nurses who have been helping me along the way, and everyone else who have been with me the whole way. I just want to say a big thank you to all of you."

"On behalf of the Philadelphia Flyers, I'd like to congratulate Oskar for this well-deserved honor given to him by the PHWA and the National Hockey League,” said Flyers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Chuck Fletcher. “Oskar is a young man that continues to impress us with his level of commitment and character. To go through what he went through and return to the team during our playoffs in the Toronto bubble shows an incredible amount of determination and courage. He followed that up by working extremely hard to prepare for a full season in which he had an immediate impact in our room and on the ice."

Lindblom is just the fourth Flyer to receive the award in franchise history and first in 10 seasons, joining Ian Laperriere (2011), Tim Kerr (1989) and Bob Clarke (1972).

Lindblom appeared in 50 of the team's 56 games and recorded 14 points (8g-6a) this past season, after being diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma by leading specialists at the University of Pennsylvania in December of 2019. He returned to the Flyers in the NHL bubble for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs and appeared in Games 6 and 7 of the Second Round vs. NY Islanders.

On May 10, 2021, the Philadelphia Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) chose Lindblom as the Flyers nominee to the NHL, and on June 8 he was named a finalist, marking the second consecutive year he was nominated and named a finalist.

Prior to his diagnosis during the 2019-20 season, Lindblom was in the midst of a breakout year. He was tied for the team lead in goals (11) and recorded 18 points (11g-7a) in 30 games.

In parts of four NHL seasons, all with the Flyers, Lindblom has recorded 38 goals and 33 assists for 71 points in 184 career regular season games. He was selected by the Flyers in the fifth round (138th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, which was held in Philadelphia.

The trophy named in Masterton's honor was originally presented by the NHL Writers' Association in 1968 to commemorate the late Bill Masterton, a player with the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey, and who died January 15, 1968.

The Top 10 Philadelphia Phillies of This Era

Classic Headline Topic:  The Best Phillies of the Current Era

-->>Due to the volume of interest generated in this specific article, I decided to re-post it today:

The 10 Best Philadelphia Phillies of This Era

Yesterday's Headline Topic: The Phillies and MLB Wild Card expansion

The Phillies' game with the Mets was postponed due to rain. So, Cloyd has been pushed to Thursday and Hamels will go tomorrow. With every win being vital, we'll see if the Phils can pickup (or will lose) a 0.5 game tonight.

Yesterday's Yahoo feature about the expansion of baseball's playoff format generated some nice numbers and interesting responsive commentary. If you are interested reading more, here's the link:

Recent Headline Topic: The Eagles

Another Eagles last-moment win, as they defeated the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

With all deep analysis left to those who have far more football experience than I do, can a team continue to play the way that it has and still win on a consistent basis?

Classic Headline Topic: The anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192 hit.

Pete broke Ty Cobb's hit record on 9/11/85. The man was unique in the annals of baseball history.

For those who are interested, my recent feature comments on Rose's time with the Phillies and the complex feelings that many of us have about his gambling issues:
Phillies' great Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, and baseball justice

Classic Headline Topic: Three Flyers' Legends

Each of these classic Flyers' legends deserved their own feature article.

It was great to see both Brian Propp and Dave Poulin at the Winter Classic Alumni game last New Year's Eve Day and to be with them in the locker room after the game. Both are classy gentleman.

Tim Kerr wasn't involved with the game, but it was interesting to learn that he has done some marvelous charity work for children since retiring.

Philadelphia Eagles Risky Business + Philadelphia Phillies' Plight

Headline Topic I: The Eagles

Another Eagles last-moment win, as they defeated the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

With all deep analysis left to those who have far more football experience than I do, can a team continue to play the way that it has and still win on a consistent basis?

Headline Topic II: The Phillies

Even a second NL Wild Card might not allow the Phillies to make the playoffs this season. Losing three out of four to the Houston Astros might have killed all realistic playoff chances. So, we'll see what this week brings and take it from there.

In the meantime, I felt compelled to elaborate on a proposed further expansion of baseball's playoff format in today's Yahoo feature:
Major League Baseball should implement a Wild Card within each division

Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 List + Philadelphia Eagles Game

Headline Topic I:  The Best Phillies of the Current Era

Another list has generated some interesting debate and some strong page view numbers.

It's also interesting to see that some readers obviously didn't read the first paragraph of this feature, as their comments have shown. While I have pointed that out here, I've made typos and errors when writing. So, life moves on. Just a side tidbit from this writer's world.

Which Phillies are in your top 10?

Headline Topic II: The Eagles

I surely hope the Eagles can top the Baltimore Ravens today. This is a good early season test. After last week's squeaker win, going 2-0 would be very well received by the fan base.

Classic Headline Topic: The anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192 hit.

Pete broke Ty Cobb's hit record on 9/11/85. The man was unique in the annals of baseball history.

I enjoyed writing two features this week about Brian Propp, Dave Poulin, and Tim Kerr.
These three Flyers are among the best in team history, so it was natural to pass my 'writing puck' from Propp, to Poulin, and then to Kerr (on the power play of course) during the past three days.

It was great to see both Propp and Poulin at the Winter Classic Alumni game last New Year's Eve Day and to be with them in the locker room after the game. Both are classy gentleman.

Can the Philadelphia Phillies Continue Their Pace?

Headline Topic I:  Phillies current pursuits

It would be too easy to say that every  game is a must-win for the Phillies, but most are. Stomping the Astros last night needs to lead to another win tonight.

The Dodgers victory over the Cards allowed the  Phils to pull back within 3 games of the Wild Card Spot, to pass the Brewers, and to tie the Pirates in this supplemental playoff race.

With 17 games to go, Philadelphia is attempting to gain postseason access in a manner in which it hasn't before. I truly don't know if they can do it, but hope to see pressured action until the very end.

If you have read it, or choose to open this link now, I hope that a recent Yahoo Sports feature adds to your baseball experience:  Philadelphia Phillies Pressured by Time

Lesson Learned During the Philadelphia Phillies' Current Run

Headline Topic I:  The Phillies' current late-season run

Written off for dead by almost everyone, the Phillies have made a late-season Wild Card run. Despite losing Game 1 to the Houston Astros last night, the Phillies still are in the thick of Wild Card race.

Any traditionalist who believes that the Wild Card isn't good apparently doesn't want people to be happy. The purpose of any professional sport is to attract fans, not to meet the intellectual needs of a small group of elitists. The second Wild Card spot gives many teams, including the Phillies hope and that is a great thing.

With however this season ends, I remain on board with extra playoff teams.

Why Top 5 Philadelphia Phillies' Lists Are Effective And Fun

Headline Topic I:  Why today's Top 5 Phillies' List Was Created

Long before the internet age was the rage, lists have caught people's attention. When I was in college, I created countless Top 10 and Top 5 lists for my buddies to enjoy. I often included self-deprecating information in the mix so that everyone knew the efforts  weren't mean-spirited.

Most of those college-aged people liked what I did. In keeping with other other stages in life, those who possessed competitive personalities did not. Such is the world.

Specifically concerning online features: Top 5, or Top whatever number lists, are quick and easy ways for readers to be entertained. This style of writing is also more apt to be shared with friends (through Facebook, Twitter, etc.) because the recipients aren't being asked to devout a lot of time to the shared bits of information.

Due to the Phillies recent playoff race surge, I took note of various reactions that were seen and created today's feature:
5 Ways That Philadelphia Phillies' Fans are Embracing Wild Card Possibilities

If you have read it, or choose to open that link now, I hope that it was worthwhile.

*As I noted in yesterday's post: "Many people ask those of us who write, how we develop our ideas. It's natural to wonder how other people think and work. The entirety of everyone's life experiences, the manner in which our minds work, and the free will we employ creates reality."
