Sixers - Celtics Playoffs and Phillies notes

Over 2.6 Million hits since my first Yahoo story was published on 2/1/11.
The power of the internet and of Social Media Friends made that happen.

76ers

How great a victory tonight would be. Can it happen? Well, this team has surprised us before.

Best of luck to Doug Collins and the guys, no matter what happens.

Phillies
A team that is adrift for sure. After winning six straight, they lose four in a row.

Keep an eye on how they continue to do against these plus-.500 teams. Ruben Amaro, Jr. will, that's for sure.

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Here is a hockey story that all ice fans will like: The mystery behind these 1970s Topps hockey cards is revealed.

Flyers

Winning the game tonight against the Penguins would help matters significantly, as Bryzgalov would have likely gotten to a good start.

Pittsburgh is a very solid team and this playoff war should prove to be well worth the seasonal wait.
Phillies

This season will be very intriguing. However, on a pure excitement level, watching any team struggle for hits is no picnic.

Amaro might be compelled to make roster adjustments if enough runs aren't being generated within the next few weeks.

Phillies

Amaro's revised roster will need to prove that in can generate offense. If it can't, expect a tense year.

All three aces must remain healthy for Manuel's team to have a good season and a chance in the playoffs.

Will there be any trades before the new season officially begins?

Will Kyle Kendrick's first appearance in the 2012 season be out of the bullpen, or as a starter?

Will Charlie Manuel be able to effectively institute more of a small-ball, on-base, mentality with the troops that he has to work with this season?

Will Ruben Amaro, Jr. make a spring training trade, or trades?

Phillies: Ed Wade's rehire was predicted

Phillies

One of the feature articles that I wrote this past summer that received the some of the strongest reaction was when I suggested that Ed Wade should be rehired if he was let go by the Houston Astros as their GM when the season ended.

Wade was fired by the Astros when the season ended and the Phillies have rehired him as a Special Consultant to their Baseball Operations Department.

The former GM's greatest success was evaluating talent. Over the course of time he didn't develop the Pat Gillick-like ability to pull off enough of the right offseason/in-season transactions to put his team over the hump. As a result he never took the Phillies to the playoffs during his tenure and was called out for it.

As Gillick noted in the past, Wade was key to the team drafting many of the core players that won the 2008 World Series.

To bring him back reveals a lot about the Phillies organizational strengths and Ruben Amaro's personal character.

Flyers-Girioux & Phillies+Willis

Flyers

"Concussions, or possible concussions, are such a tricky issue. Here's hoping that he is completely okay. The team can't afford to lose him for any sustained period of time."

That was my quote from yesterday's blog post. Well, he's got a concussion and now all bets are off. Oh boy.

Phillies

The Phillies are always taking risks, based upon the incredibly positive influence of Pat Gillick. Ruben Amaro, Jr. has credited him on many occassions for creating a creative management mindset in the Phillies front offices.

The latest proof of that is the addition of free agent Dontrelle Willis as a lefty specialist in the bullpen. A low-risk move that fills a void in the pen, which has the potential to be a team strength. Things have to fall right for that to become a reality, but there are enough quality arms to make it possible.

Joe Paterno to retire, Flyers, & Phillies

TY to over ---850,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Penn State -

News today that Joe Paterno will retire creates a compromise between those who believed he should have been made to leave now and others who want to allow him to have the appearance of control over his own fate.

Flyers -

Pronger might be back as the team heads to Tampa.

Whether he returns tonight, or later in the week, his presence will help to steady a defense that has looked similar to last spring's playoff corp.

Phillies -

Madson might be nearing a deal, with Papelbon as a fall back. (Or vice versa.)

In any regard, Amaro's changes regarding the starting lineup will decide if this team can be a legit contender next season.

Phillies - Rollins 5 years? & Flyers home opener

TY to over ---770,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

At yesterday's press conferences...Jimmy Rollins stated that he wants a four-year deal, with a fifth year at his option.

Ruben Amaro said that the Phillies are willing to consider several years for Rollins.

Would they go for five? Seems like that is a stretch.

Someone will be willing to give him that. Maybe the Giants, the Braves, or a sleeper team like the Nationals- (probably not them, but a team like them who has money and needs to add a star).

It will truly be a new era if he does leave.

His glove work at shortstop places him among the best (fielding percentage wise) to have ever played the game. Read them for yourself: Baseball's all-time fielding percentage leaders.

Flyers -

When the home opener happens tonight something new will be in the air. The atmosphere surrounding this team is dynamic, fresh and hopeful.

Whether they can do anything significant this season is a question. But, Holmgren accomplished his goal of changing course. That was needed.
