The Night Lenny Dykstra Was Swinging In The Rain

Over the next few weeks I'm going to provide background information about some of my favorite stories that I've ever written. Today's spotlight involves:

The Night Lenny Dykstra Was Swinging In The Rain

Zero Philadelphia Phillies' fans anticipated the 1993 season. But, somehow, someway that great group of likable men made it to the World Series.

While that rowdy group didn't win it all, they created countless memorable moments that have endured through the past two decades. With a wink at the famous Gene Kelly movie, I connected a rainy October night and Lenny Dykstra's towering Game 4 performance in an unbelievable 15-14 loss.

The 'Dude' was...

The Best Holiday Memories

Over the next few weeks I'm going to provide background information about some of the favorite stories that I've written. Today's spotlight involves:

The Best Holiday Memories

Many years ago I lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania, which was the setting for NBC's former show 'The Office'. I had the great pleasure of working in public/media relations in the front office for the Philadelphia Phillies' former Triple-A team the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. It was a very pleasant position filled with great co-workers, challenging professional work (that still ranks among the most stimulating of my career) and a stream of memorable moments.

One of my most cherished memories involves a certain summer night spent at the first location where I lived. That inner-city spot wasn't plush, but it was home. The people who became my friends way back then have remained with me ever since.

On one particular night...

Could One Baseball Shatter The Summer?

Over the next few weeks I'm going to provide inside information about some of my favorite story links. Today's spotlight is:

Could One Baseball Shatter The Summer?

Long-gone vacation days remain among our most treasured memories because of the moments we shared with beloved family members and friends.

My cousin Chris and I used our excess kid energy by playing catch outside the beach home that our families lived in during many memorable July days. One day we were outside having fun when...

When Baseball Cards Were King

Over the next few weeks I'm going to provide inside information about some of my favorite story links.

When Baseball Cards Were King

The hobby that introduced me to the game of baseball was the collection of baseball cards.

Buying packs of 'cardboard gold' during my early childhood remains a treasured memory.

These pre-sabermetric items were mini-encyclopedias in 3-D form.

So many great moments were shared with family members and friends/classmates in the late 1970s and early 1980s, some of which are listed in this feature.

'When Baseball Cards Were King' has been one of my most popular features, having been seen by well over 10,000 people since I first wrote it in May, 2011.

Preakness Stakes' Victory Stops Triple Crown Bid

Congratulations to Hall of Fame Jockey Gary Stevens and Hall of Famer trainer D. Wayne Lukas for taking a long shot and winning the Preakness Stakes. His victory aboard Oxbow stopped Triple Crown hopes for Orb. But, it could set up a nice battle at the Belmont Stakes on June 8 if both horses are entered in that third leg.

Stevens' win was quite a feat, as he rode the fifth longest shot (15-1) within the past century to victory in the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.

Horse racing has long been one of my favorite live sporting events because of the excitement that surrounds great days like this one.

5 Traits of Hardcore Philadelphia Phillies' Fans

Every longtime baseball fan considers himself/herself to be hardcore. In Philadelphia there are particular elements within the culture that helps to define who we are.

I loved writing this one because the exaggerations weren't so far from reality. Those of us who saw the 1980 and 2008 World Series' victories are deeply fortunate and owe an eternal debt of gratitude to every fan who ever lived and never saw either great team.

Television Haiku Poem

Over the next week, or so, I'm going to provide inside information about each of the 'personal favorite' story links that are shown below.

Television Haiku Poem

Television is fully woven into the American culture and into many parts of the worldwide consciousness. Anyone who believes that the internet will break this thread must be unaware that radio was projected for the ash can many decades ago.

The advent of holographic images will cause a new dimension in television to move beyond the final line of this Haiku.
