Behind The Scenes: NHL Vezina Trophy Award Winner Sergei Bobrovsky

Background information regarding my most recent Yahoo story...

NHL Awards: Sergei Bobrovsky Edges Out Ilya Bryzgalov for Vezina Trophy

'Bob' was always a very quiet player in the Philadelphia Flyers locker room. The lady that is shown directly to his left in this photo that I took served as his 'unofficial' translator during the time he was with the Flyers. She is a journalist of European origin who is based in the United States.

I had considered the title: 'Bobrovsky Wins Vezina - Bryzgalov Wins Nothing' for this piece, but thought that was a bit too much. Plus, the SEO value of that title wasn't as worthy. (Inside internet humor there folks.)

It's easy for me, or for anyone, to second-guess Paul Holmgren at this point.

For my part, I just continue to wonder what type of vetting process the Flyers have in-place regarding high-profile free agents, potential trade acquisitions, draft picks, etc. ?

Every company needs to know (or should seek to know) about a person's background and politically record (as in office politics) before a hiring decision is made.

What did the Flyers learn about 'Bryz' two years ago before they traded for his rights and then gave him a $51 million contract.

That is the question and may always be.

Phillies reach arbitration deal + Flyers 'Bob' should be backed up by 'Bryz'

Over 1.1 Million hits since my first Yahoo story was published on 2/1/11.
The power of the internet and of Social Media Friends made that happen.

Phillies

The Phillies avoided arbitration with Kyle Kendrick by signing him to a one-year deal worth approximately $3.5 million.

Kendrick has become a very nice flexible arm in the pen, who can also easily slide into a starters role. He is good insurance and might serve in a more prominent middle innings role in 2012 depending on how other things shake out as the season progress.

Flyers

I'll make this as direct as possible: Someday Bryzgalov might get on track and be the goalie the team needs him to be. Until then, I would start Bobrovsky indefinitely and have 'Bryz' back 'Bob' up.

Flyers

With however the season plays out, one thing is clear - this team generally plays calmly when Bobrovsky is between the pipes.

Regardless of age, or career experience, he has been the team's better goalie this season. The players know that and it gives them confidence.

No one wants to be looking over their shoulder, or looking to settle down the defensive leader (the goaltender) during any game.

Time will tell who is playing well down the stretch and how leads the group into/during the playoffs.

Flyers pre-Winter Classic game

Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year to everyone who helped me to hit the one million reader mark during the weekend of 12/17/11. My first Yahoo Sports story was published on 2/1/11.

Flyers

With the Winter Classic game just around the corner and the Alumni game this weekend, the Flyers have one final 2011 regular season game against the Pittsburgh Penguins to play today.

It's not a good thing for the Pens, or for the League, that Crosby is out indefinitely. It should be interesting to see how his absence affects this particular game tonight.

Bobrovsky will start in goal, as Bryzgalov's struggles have reappeared in his game.

Inside access with the Flyers

TY to over ---910,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

Thank you -

I will be detailing many of the behind the scenes activities of Flyers games as time moves forward in order to give you inside access to the team.

Let me preview that by saying that the Philadelphia Flyers organization is perfectly gracious and welcoming to those of us who are media members. A good business is built and maintained by quality individuals who create a team, both on the ice and off it.

A special thank you also goes to all of my writer friends as yesterday's game. A good group of people who have passion for the game and exhibit strong talent in the work they create about it.

As far as the game went...

Sharp holiday contest against the Canadiens in Philadelphia.

Giroux continues to "spread his wings" as head coach Peter Laviolette said of his young star.

Bobrovsky continues to impress into his second year.

Happy Thanksgiving: Flyers, Phillies and Eagles notes

TY to over ---900,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

Good OT win by the Flyers last night.

Yes, their defense was shaky. But, in Pronger's absence these things will happen.

Bob did well in taking over for Bryzgalov.

Black Friday is hopefully a good one.

Phillies -

They need to have a number of Christmas wish list items checked off in the next few weeks.

Their ability to do so will determine how hopeful 2012 can be.

Eagles -

Yes, there is always hope. But, there is also realism.

Never over, until its over. So, let's see what this weekend brings.

Flyers + Bobrovsky = Senators' game

TY to over ---790,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

According to various media sources, Sergei Bobrovsky is set to get his first start in net against the Senators.

Ilya Bryzgalov will play the bulk of the team's games this season. So, it would be surprising to see 'Bob' appear in more than 20 games.

Of course injuries can always crop up as the season progresses.

The good news is they have 'Bob' as a backup and Michael Leighton in Adirondack if the need arises.

Depth in goal wins championships. Long before that happens, it also gets teams through the regular season.
