NHL Rumors: Philadelphia Flyers May Buyout Ilya Bryzgalov

According to a Philadelphia-based media report: The Philadelphia Flyers might exercise both amnesty options this summer.

The first amnesty option will almost certainly be used for veteran forward Danny Briere. The second may be used for goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov

The Flyers have never been a patient organization. So, it seems at least plausible that they would opt to use both amnesty options this off-season, rather than waiting until next year to either use both, or to exercise their second exile option.

This situation could play out as soon as 48 hours after the Stanley Cup has been won, or up to 5 p.m. on June 30, which will be amateur draft day.

If they do cut 'Bryz' a massive check and tell him to leave town it will be a monumental admission of error and likely create a season (or possibly two) that will determine general manager Paul Holmgren's fate.

Philadelphia Flyers' Trade for Islanders' Captain Mark Streit Makes Sense

The Philadelphia Flyers' acquisition of New York Islanders' 35-year-old captain and unrestricted free agent defenseman Mark Streit follows in the pattern of past aggressive Paul Holmgren moves.

From the Islanders' perspective, they were able to add a 2014 fourth-round draft pick and AHL right wing prospect Shane Harper.

The Flyers' top front office boss has exhibited a habit of engineering 'creative' roster adjustments since he first became GM in the fall of 2006.

His move to add this veteran D-Man, whose 2013-13 0.56 ppg average basically equaled his career 0.59 ppg average should prove to be a solid move. It also likely signals the pending departure of one of the Flyers' veteran defensemen for reasons that are salary cap- and performance related.

Defense was a team weakness this past shortened-season. Holmgren has given head coach Peter Laviolette a dependable blue line piece that immediately bolsters the top three pairings. Expect more work to be done on the 2013-14 roster as the summer unfolds.

Headline Topic:  Phillies + Free Agents

I hope that the Phillies are taking a comprehensive approach to their offseason decisions.

A few years ago, Pat Gillick mentioned that Ruben Amaro Jr. liked the big-ticket players. I, along with all seasoned baseball fans, knew what Pat was getting at.

Amaro has reached a roster crossroad. His available payroll space is more limited than it ever has been, but he has a variety of needs to fill.

I would like to see Ruf in LF, Brown and Mayberry in RF, a new player in CF and a modestly-priced veteran option at 3B. Two (not just one) veteran middle-inning relievers must be obtained as well.

Regarding free agency specifically:  I assume that a high-priced option(s) would only be obtained if other current players are going to be let go after next season. (Possibly, one could be dealt this winter as well.)

Smart trades and small targeted (Pat Gillick-type) moves will give the Phillies a chance to rebound into playoff contention next season.

Recent Headline Topics:  Baseball Trade + NHL Lockout

1. I wish the Phillies could have somehow gotten in on that Marlin's trade with the Blue Jays. Talk about revitalizing your team in one fell swoop. My gosh!

It will be interesting to see if that deal impacts what other teams might do this winter, in terms of their targets, now that so many Marlins have become Blue Jays.

2. Last week offered hope that the NHL Lockout would end soon. Now, with no apparent progress this week, we are left to wonder if both sides are talking at all.

The thought of no hockey season is not pleasant. If we get to January with no resolution, this season could likely be done.

Eagles

All the best to Andy Reid and his team tonight. This season isn't just about football this year for the Eagles' head coach.

I wish him a SUPER BOWL year.

Sixers

The 76ers major summer trade should help the remaining members of last season's playoff group to become that much better.

This has become a far more balanced squad through all of the offseason moves. Most importantly, they will be led by Doug Collins who is ready to take his basketball team to new heights.

Phillies

Is Chase Utley's career fielding percentage at second base .972, .982, or .992 ?

For those who don't know, the answer is found in my Yahoo Sports baseball article that was published today:

Eagles

All the best to Andy Reid and his team tonight. This season isn't just about football this year for the Eagles' head coach.

I wish him a SUPER BOWL year.

Sixers

The 76ers new ownership group is incredible. Now that this trade has apparently been made, the team has been transformed from last season's playoff group.

This has become a far more balanced squad through all of the offseason moves. Most importantly, they will be led by Mr. Doug Collins. That great coach is ready to take Philadelphia's basketball team to new heights.

Flyers

The injury that Andrej Meszaros suffered last week (torn right Achilles tendon) was repaired by surgery today. Obviously Philly fans connected this dire dot to that of Ryan Howard's same injury (left Achilles tendon) that happened at the end of last season.

Losing Meszaros is very troubling for this Flyers team. I'm not sure how Holmgren can compensate. Basically he and Peter Laviolette need two of their young defensemen to step up and play well all season long.

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.
