Preakness Stakes

The second leg of the Triple Crown takes place on May 19, 2012.

In the smallest field since 2007, I'll Have Another might have a better shot to win again than if the field were larger. While Mario Gutierrez navigated his way through a large field in the Kentucky Derby, less legs might mean a straighter course toward victory.

Bodemeister is no slouch as the favorite in this race.

One last sentimental point is that it's a shame Calvin Borel isn't riding someone. He is a true character and a welcome personality in this great sport.

Here is a direct link to the Pimlico site and another to my Yahoo feature on the race.

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Sixers

A one-point victory in Game 2 to counter the one-point loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 1.

As a good friend and basketball fan told me tonight, Doug Collins has this deep team playing tough defense.

Got a split in Beantown. Nice!

Sixers

The one-point loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 1 could have been a win, but you can't have everything.

It would be best to take Game 2 tomorrow, because it would seemly overly challenging to win four out of a possible five games from a good team like this one is.
Phillies

Juan Pierre has sold me on his continuing ability to get on base and generate runs. He should play in left
field the majority of the time and hit no lower than second in every game.

Carlos Ruiz is having a breakout year. I would like to see him hit cleanup for a few games to see how it goes. He's mentally strong enough to handle whatever the results of that experiment would be.

Pence just isn't cutting it in Howard's spot.

Sixers

Closed out the Bulls on Thursday and open the second round series on the road against the Boston Celtics tonight.

This young team should have the legs to run in Game 1, but will they be able to channel the momentum they have gained into a victory?

Getting the jump in this round would be significant.

Phillies

It seems hard to imagine this specific collection of players being anything more than middling this season.

They have some great players, some poor ones and a majority who are just average. That would seem to indicate a record around .500 by season's end.

Something unusual would have to happen for them to push towards 90 wins this year.

Philadelphia 76ers Classic Blog Post - Now Playoff Enhanced

Over 2.5 Million hits since my first Yahoo story was published on 2/1/11.

AS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON 2/1/12.....

76ers

There were those who said the Doug Collins-led Sixers team was good. But, when they faced the better teams, they would fall.

That seemed logical. But, it was also a reliance on who the team had been in the past. It did not represent a view of who the group might become, or who they are right now.

Their win over the Eastern Conference leading Chicago Bulls was no fluke. This is a sound defensive team, with spirit. Their coach is a one of the best in the League. Period.

If all of their key people remain fully healthy in this shortened season, this young team will win more than 40 games and could win at least two playoff rounds.

That old 76ers theme song is playing louder and louder and louder and louder as every week passes.

One, two, three, four, five...."Clap your hands everybody for the Philadelphia 76ers..."
