How I Develop My Philadelphia Phillies' Features and Other Stories

Headline Topic I: The birth of today's Phillies' story

Many people often ask me (and others who write regularly) how we develop our ideas. It's natural to wonder how other people think, how they utilize their talents (that each one of us has), and how they handle whatever work it is that they do.

The entirety of everyone's life experiences, the manner in which our minds work, and the free will we employ creates reality.

Let me show you what that means regarding the story, "Philadelphia Phillies Hope to Sing in September", that I had published today.

1. It's September.
2. I like 1970s songs because I grew up then.
3. The Phillies were a winning team during my childhood, which helped to form positive
emotional connections to that time period and to that team.
4. "Earth, Wind, and Fire" had many great songs, one of which was "September". Because
I and everyone of my age group, has heard that song countless times (a positive for me,
because I like the song), I know that the lyrics include a reference to the 21st night of
    September.
5. A check of the Phillies' schedule, some calculations of games remaining, and this story
    idea was born.

Headline Topic II: The anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192 hit.

Pete broke Ty Cobb's hit record on 9/11/85. The man was unique in the annals of baseball history.

For those who are interested, my recent feature comments on Rose's time with the Phillies and the complex feelings that many of us have about his gambling issues:
Phillies' great Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, and baseball justice

Classic Headline Topic: Three Flyers' Legends

I enjoyed writing two features this week about Brian Propp, Dave Poulin, and Tim Kerr.
These three Flyers are among the best in team history, so it was natural to pass my 'writing puck' from Propp, to Poulin, and then to Kerr (on the power play of course) during the past three days.

It was great to see both Propp and Poulin at the Winter Classic Alumni game last New Year's Eve Day and to be with them in the locker room after the game. Both are classy gentleman.

Kerr wasn't involved with the game, but it was interesting to learn that he has done some marvelous charity work for children since retiring.

Last, but not least, Kerr's link became available today:

September 1, 2001 + The Anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192 Hit

Headline Topic: September 11, 2001

This is a mostly sports-related blog, but I do touch on important social topics from time to time.

On 9/11/01 we didn't think of ourselves as being part of any group. We responded as though we were one. I like to think that reality represented who we were, who we are, and who we always can be.

God Bless the souls who were lost, all who were affected, and everyone who loves humanity today.

Two Philadelphia Phillies' Icons + Three Philadelphia Flyers' Legends

Headline Topic: Ryan Howard and Mike Schmidt

Ryan Howard and Mike Schmidt are indelible members of the Phillies franchise. I'm pleased to have been alive to see both of these great sluggers.

Schmidt is undoubtedly one of the greatest players (not just third baseman) of all-time. Howard is one of the great sluggers of this era.

Here is my recent feature about both men:
Howard's Importance in the Phillies' Lineup is Undeniable

Philadelphia Eagles Game-day + Three Philadelphia Flyers' Legends Detailed

Headline Topic: Eagles' Game-day

With practice behind them and the future ahead, I just want to simply wish Andy Reid and the Eagles all the best this season. In consideration of what the Reid family has endured and the face of courage that head coach Reid has shown during these past weeks after the death of his son, I have never hoped that man, his team, and all Eagles' fans will win the Super Bowl any more so than this year.

With all due respect offered for all of the great athletes on the field for every team - God Bless the Philadelphia Eagles this season.

Philadelphia Flyers' Legends

Headline Topic: Flyers' Legends

I enjoyed writing two features this week about Brian Propp and Dave Poulin. It was a pleasure to see both of them at the Winter Classic Alumni game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on New Year's Eve day. Speaking with so many Flyers' legends in the locker room after the game was a tremendous experience.

Poulin's feature will be out later today. Tomorrow's feature will highlight another great 1980's Flyer.
