Philadelphia Phillies' Question + Philadelphia Flyers' fans

Headline Topic: Phillies

Which current Phillies do you think will/won't be back next season?

Consensus among the fans seems to be building that Jimmy Rollins 3-year contract might not be completed, or if it is, that he will certainly hit lower in the batting order through its fulfillment.

Juan Pierre is a nice veteran presence on this team. He plays the game the right way. There surely is one space on the roster and enough salary space available for his likely modest demands to keep one of the better small-ball players of this era around next season.

Headline topic #2: Flyers' fans

I invite those fans who realize that this season might not start on time to have some fun while reading about themselves in my latest hockey feature that we written with you (us) in mind:

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Hockey

Here is a hockey story that all ice fans will like: The mystery behind these 1970s Topps hockey cards is revealed.

Flyers

What is the name of the Flyers ECHL affiliate?

For those who don't know, the answer is found in my Yahoo Sports article:
NHL lockout could serve some Philadelphia Flyers' Purposes

Eagles

All the best to Andy Reid and his team tonight. This season isn't just about football this year for the Eagles' head coach.

I wish him a SUPER BOWL year.

Sixers

The 76ers major summer trade should help the remaining members of last season's playoff group to become that much better.

This has become a far more balanced squad through all of the offseason moves. Most importantly, they will be led by Doug Collins who is ready to take his basketball team to new heights.

Philadelphia Phillies' Offseason Decisions

Headline Topic: Phillies

Among many offseason  decisions, I want this team to get a new leadoff hitter via trade, through some internal promotion, or whatever.

I'm okay with keeping Rollins, because he can still pick it at shortstop. But, moving him to the sixth spot would make the best use of his hitting style. The man has pop, as evidenced by his 15 home runs.

This move didn't happen when the Phillies were winning, now that they won't make the playoffs this season, anyone who rules out this move is mistaken.

Flyers

Game 1 always feels like a scouting mission. Each side aggressively trying to feel out the other.

Here is a hockey story that all ice fans will like: The mystery behind these 1970s Topps hockey cards is revealed.

Phillies

Papelbon has quietly gotten off to a very nice start.

Interested to see if Rollins is able to produce from the leadoff slot in a way that helps to create consistent first inning runs. Also, to see where Pierre fits into the lineup below him when he starts in left field.

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

That time of year always included Topps newest edition of cards. Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Flyers dominate and Phillies negotiate

Flyers

The first game without Giroux was stunning. The Flyers had tremendous energy and the Capitals were simply over-matched. To believe that the team can play like that every night, or that their opponent will respond in the same way obviously isn't the projected future.

It will be extremely challenging for the Flyers to stay in the Eastern Conference chase if Giroux is out for an extended period of time.

Phillies

The Phillies negotiations with Jimmy Rollins have not yet reached an ending point.

How long will either side allow the other to play out the string is questionable. Neither side wants to be left with an unacceptable alternative. For the Phillies - a weak shortstop situation. For Rollins - an undesirable contract with a team he may not want to play for.

Phillies: Winter Meetings Talk + Flyers notes

TY to over ---940,000 people---who have read my Yahoo Sports, News and Voices articles this year. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Jimmy Rollins may, or may not re-sign with the team. The thought of the team's lineup without him is intriguing. The thought of the infield without him is troubling, unless a great glove man replaces him.
And thus the rub of his free agency.

Bring in Aramis Ramirez for third if you can.

Wouldn't it be great if Madson would accept arbitration? Yes. Though, you would have to think that some team will offer him more than a one-year deal.

Flyers -

Conference realignment is technical talk for now. It will take a number of seasons to truly determine how it affects the team.

A big Phillies free agent acquisition in the near future?

TY to over ---940,000 people---who have read my Yahoo Sports, News and Voices articles this year. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

The MLB network is reporting that the Phillies are interested in Cubs free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

This player has the offensive resume to make a difference in the Phillies lineup. Yes, he isn't a great defensive player. But, his right-handed stick would beef up the middle of the order for sure.

When Polanco is healthy enough to play, he could be kept as a super-sub.

The ongoing Rollins' negotiations will affect, but not stop this from happening if it's meant to.

Phillies free agents + Flyers - Sabres - Devils

TY to over ---830,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Today, begins the free agent frenzy.

The most recent teams rumored to be interested in Jimmy Rollins are the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and...wait for it...the Washington Nationals.

Ryan Madson is also rumored to be courted by the Nats.

Imagine Phillies part 2 in DC with Werth, Rollins and Madson.  Oh my.

Flyers -

The Flyers played a nice game against a good defensive Sabres team.

Don't forget they were shorthanded, as Pronger, Schenn, Briere and Read did not play.

Jagr continued to look just great on the ice.

Bryzgalov might be settling down in the net. He doesn't look totally comfortable, but was steady enough to help his team win.

The Philly pressure cooker is certainly to continue to cook his casserole.

Next up is the Devils at home on Thursday.

Phillies free agents

TY to over ---820,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Rollins, Madson and Oswalt are Type A free agents.

If the Phillies offer them arbitration, they can get some high level draft picks in the form of compensation.

That would help them to restock their system.

But, that also could allow the players to accept their offer. So, time will tell how this all plays out.

Phillies - Rollins 5 years? & Flyers home opener

TY to over ---770,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

At yesterday's press conferences...Jimmy Rollins stated that he wants a four-year deal, with a fifth year at his option.

Ruben Amaro said that the Phillies are willing to consider several years for Rollins.

Would they go for five? Seems like that is a stretch.

Someone will be willing to give him that. Maybe the Giants, the Braves, or a sleeper team like the Nationals- (probably not them, but a team like them who has money and needs to add a star).

It will truly be a new era if he does leave.

His glove work at shortstop places him among the best (fielding percentage wise) to have ever played the game. Read them for yourself: Baseball's all-time fielding percentage leaders.

Flyers -

When the home opener happens tonight something new will be in the air. The atmosphere surrounding this team is dynamic, fresh and hopeful.

Whether they can do anything significant this season is a question. But, Holmgren accomplished his goal of changing course. That was needed.
