World Series Champions + Flyers notes

TY to over ---820,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

World Series -

The St. Louis Cardinals historic Game 6 victory was followed by an easy defeat of a Texas Rangers team.

Watching the last few innings, we could see in the eyes of the Rangers' players that they knew they were beat.

Congrats to the 2011 World Series Champion Cardinals. You have earned and deserve baseball's crown.

Flyers -

The team plays against the Hurricanes tonight in Philly.

Things have gone far off course recently. Hopefully, they get back on track soon so that this unit can at least remain steady until Chris Pronger returns to action.

Rangers to win World Series tonight, or will Cardinals force 7th game? + Flyers

TY to over ---810,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

World Series -

In what has developed into an interesting 'Fall Classic', the Texas Rangers find themselves on the verge of their first-ever World Series championship.

I wonder what the reaction to Tony LaRussa's unusual bullpen moves in Game 5 would have been if they would have been made by any other manager...Say Charlie Manuel.

While a seventh game would be great, tonight could be the final time baseball is played in 2011.

Flyers -

Meanwhile Bryzgalov will be back in net as the Flyers faced the Canadiens.

He seemingly has worked out signals with his defensive partners and is ready to go. All part of the normal process of guys getting to know each other. Probably, no big deal.

Hopefully Chris Pronger's situation continues to improve as well.

Pronger's eye injury & Jagr and Hartnell's 2 goals

TY to over ---810,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

Two goals by two Flyers would generally make for a good story. But, not last night.

Wow, was that scary. Seeing Chris Pronger leaving the ice screaming after he was hit around, or on, his eye against the Maple Leafs.

I felt particularly bad because I had just been with him less than a month ago.

I interviewed Pronger in the Flyers' locker room after practice in Voorhees.

While he is a very physically imposing presence, he is also a good guy to talk with.

The man truly seemed like he was healthy and ready to skate into the new season.

I thought last night about also interviewing Bernie Parent a year ago. He told me that his vision was restored through surgery.

Increased equipment protection must be imposed in the NHL. The lives of these men matter too much.

Flyers + Pronger & the Blues

TY to over ---800,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

The team faces the Blues tonight.

Chris Pronger was traded to by Hartford to St. Louis for Brendan Shanahan in 1995. He went onto win the Hart and Norris trophies in '99-'00.

He remains one of the best defensemen in the League and one of the best in the past two decades. His continued health should allow the Flyers to have a chance at some success this season.

Phillies – Cards – Game 5 - & Flyers win season opener

TY to over ---760,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Well, it all comes down to this. Halladay vs. Carpenter.

After 104 combined wins in the regular and postseason, if the Phillies win number 105 they will advance.

If they end the season with an overall record of 104-63 it will be a disaster.

If they lose this series, they will actually be in the midst of a three-year decline.

Win the World Series in 2008.
Lose the World Series in 2009.
Lose the NLCS in 2010.
And then … I don't even want to type it.

Can they win? Of course. But, to have blown two games so far is hardly inspirational.

Flyers -

Meanwhile, off in Flyerville... they beat the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins 2-1 in the season opener.

Everyone looked sharp. Bryzgalov, Jagr, Couturier, Pronger, etc.

This hockey team will fly way under the radar in Philly for a long time this season. Somewhere after Christmas the fans will realize that the house cleaning that happened was a positive, gutsy decision on the part of Ed Snider and Paul Holmgren.

A decision that has set the team up for a good, long-term, road ahead.

Phillies challenge and Flyers season preview

TY to over ---750,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa got the split he wanted.

Cliff Lee was 89-1 with that type of lead in his career, but it didn't matter.

Will the series be decided by Tuesday's winner? It could be, but that's not a certainty.

Cole Hamels needs to shut the Cardinals down. Period.

Flyers -

Meanwhile, off in Flyerville... This has been a very intriguing summer and subsequent training camp.

Coach Laviolette is a sharp leader and in-game strategist. He has the type of personal qualities that are needed and are effective in today's game.

Pronger is a great leader. Hopefully his health allows him to be present for most games this season because he continues to stand with every elite defenseman who has played in his era.

Jagr could very well have a nice comeback NHL.

Bryzgalov appears to be an ice general, who is fully confident in his abilities and has the demeanor to weather the ups and downs of a full season.

Might the Flyers surprise everyone this season with a better than projected set of overall results? Yes.

Phillies - Game 2 & Flyers' notes

TY to over ---740,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Halladay truly showed why he is one of, if not, the best in the game. After allowing those three first inning runs he settled down and also mowed them down. He clipped the Cardinals offensive wings.

Ask yourself how many pitchers would have survived late into that type of series opening playoff game, like Doc did?

Now, Cliff takes over.

The Phils face a great test against Chris Carpenter, who is a superb pitcher. Win today and it would be very challenging for St. Louis to take three in a row.

Lose today and Tony LaRussa would have the split he wanted.

Flyers -

Meanwhile, off in Flyerville... With preseason games behind them, the team will be making its final preparations for the home opener.

Will Pronger open the season? Probably, unless he feels his back isn't ready.

Will Jaromir Jagr make an offensive impact? Yes.

Will the impressive Matt Read be one of the teams top 12 forwards after his impressive camp? Yes.

Bryzgalov continues to assume his role as the new top guy in net. This process will take more than a few September weeks to fully play out.

Coach Laviolette is a sharp leader who maintains consistency and puts his players into positions to be effective.

So, if the roster is relatively healthy this year, don't be surprised if the Flyers outperform expectations this season.

Phillies - Cardinals Game 1 & Flyers' notes

TY to over ---740,000 readers---of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

As with past playoff years, the weather may play a factor in Game 1. (The Yankees and Tigers had their own first playoff game suspended because of rain.)

The Phillies really need Roy Halladay to have the opportunity to do what he does for a full game, without weather distractions. That gives them their best shot to win right out of the playoff box.

While Halladay is not invincible, he certainly is a red light player.

Flyers -

Meanwhile, off in Flyerville... They face the Devils tonight as the preseason begins to wind down.

Credit to coach Peter Laviolette, Captain Chris Pronger, and other players like returning veterans Danny Briere for keeping this team's motor running through a number of offseason transactions.

Each of Paul Holmgren's moves were designed to move the team forward in hopes of winning the Cup.

The Flyers are one of the classiest organizations in all of sports. That leadership starts with Ed Snider and is felt throughout the entire organization.

They always try to win and no one can ask for more than that. That honesty has built fan loyalty and a consistently competitive place in the NHL.

Pronger has been the Flyers captain since he first arrived in Philly

TY to over ---710,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

Chris Pronger has been the captain since he first arrived two years ago. Today's announcement just makes it official.

When healthy, he is the team's best defenseman since Mark Howe and that's really saying something.

Health is the biggest issue regarding Prongs.

If he can maintain himself, the team has a chance to compete in the playoffs next spring.

If he can't, it's hard to imagine how far they could possibly advance. That's assuming they make the playoffs, as this new mix of players has yet to show anything other than promise.

Phillies and Flyers

TY to over ---700,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11. http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies  -

Hopefully last night's loss to the Astros is not the start of a pattern. The team needs to wrap up the division ASAP and then prepare for the playoffs.

Beyond keeping, or getting, guys as healthy as possible, the Phillies need to rest some tired legs and set the rotation for October.

Flyers -

Ilya Bryzgalov and Chris Pronger are the two obvious keys to the soon-to-start Flyers season.

If both are healthy and play well, Philadelphia has a chance to be among the best teams in the League.
Without one, they are just average. Without both....hope for the next season is all the fans will have.
