And they're off!!!

Flyers

Game 3 was a lost opportunity. The Devils defense isn't what it was once during those terrible 'Trap' years, but it's still good enough to stop the Flyers offensive thrust.

*Philadelphia needs Couturier to return in order to help neutralize the Devils offensive efforts. They also need Bryzgalov to not surrender so many goals.

A loss in Game 4 would be very (Very) difficult to overcome. So, the biggest test of this Flyers season comes on Sunday night.

Here is a hockey story that all ice fans will like: The mystery behind these 1970s Topps hockey cards is revealed.

Phillies

The up-and-down spring trek continues for the Phillies.

This season is playing out differently than past ones so far. As to what they standings show in September is purely a guess on anyone's part, so I won't make mine yet.

Baseball cards

For those of us who are old enough to remember When Baseball Cards were King, the spring is always a special time of year.

Bygone days spent with elementary school days and family members opening packs of Topps cardboard gold never truly fade away.

Flyers

Nice Game 1 win. Brodeur was better than Bryzgalov and that needs to change, starting in Game 2. Another win there, could ice the series even it stretches toward the Penguins range.
Here is a hockey story that all ice fans will like: The mystery behind these 1970s Topps hockey cards is revealed.

Phillies

As the fans await the return of Howard and Utley, this lineup will eek along.

It's amazing that Pence has seemed to conform to what the other hitters are doing, versus displaying plate behavior that was solid last season. Group think seems to be in force.

Flyers

In Game 6 Bryz must shine, or it will be back to Pittsburgh for potential doom time.

Phillies

Cliff Lee on the DL is not good, especially when the lineup is hitting like there is trouble under the hood.

Flyers

In Game 5 the Pens try to stay alive. But, will a Grossmann-less defense allow Bryz to be able to save enough goal-ovs to push Pittsburgh out of the playoffs?
Phillies

Worley worked well last night, now Cole Hamels tries to make Friday night feel so right.

Flyers

Hopefully the chip fracture that Bryzgalov apparently suffered during warmups before the Lightning game isn't serious.

This team needs him to be ready for the playoffs, especially considering how well he has played of late.

Flyers

It will be interesting to see if Bryzgalov can keep his motor running and his mind focused as we head down the regular season stretch.

Anything is possible, once the playoffs begin. So, who knows what's in store for this particular Flyers team.

Phillies

Can the Phillies produce two 20-game winners? Three would seem unrealistic.

Can Papelbon save 40 games?

Will any Phillie cross the 30-home run mark?

These questions and many others will be answered as time moves forward. Play ball!!!!

Phillies reach arbitration deal + Flyers 'Bob' should be backed up by 'Bryz'

Over 1.1 Million hits since my first Yahoo story was published on 2/1/11.

Phillies

The Phillies avoided arbitration with Kyle Kendrick by signing him to a one-year deal worth approximately $3.5 million.

Kendrick has become a very nice flexible arm in the pen, who can also easily slide into a starters role. He is good insurance and might serve in a more prominent middle innings role in 2012 depending on how other things shake out as the season progress.

Flyers

I'll make this as direct as possible: Someday Bryzgalov might get on track and be the goalie the team needs him to be. Until then, I would start Bobrovsky indefinitely and have 'Bryz' back 'Bob' up.

Flyers' Bryzgalov is Amazing

Happy New Year to everyone who helped me to hit the one million reader mark during the weekend of 12/17/11. My first Yahoo Sports story was published on 2/1/11.

Flyers

Ilya Bryzgalov can't play like this all season, can he?

On some plays, he's crouched too low to the ice.

He seems not to be able to negotiate traffic in front of the net, or to be able to adjust to very common redirection shots.

He sometimes stands overly close to the goal and looks as though his reflexes are slow.

It looks like he's learning to play the position of goaltender for the very first time.

Incredibly, he's physically healthy. (We can always leave open the possibility that he's not, but that seems far fetched.)

It's all mental.

At his age and with his prior experience, this is amazing.

Flyers pre-Winter Classic game

Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year to everyone who helped me to hit the one million reader mark during the weekend of 12/17/11. My first Yahoo Sports story was published on 2/1/11.

Flyers

With the Winter Classic game just around the corner and the Alumni game this weekend, the Flyers have one final 2011 regular season game against the Pittsburgh Penguins to play today.

It's not a good thing for the Pens, or for the League, that Crosby is out indefinitely. It should be interesting to see how his absence affects this particular game tonight.

Bobrovsky will start in goal, as Bryzgalov's struggles have reappeared in his game.

Flyers notes + Phillies and Jorge Posada

Flyers

The Flyers are getting set to play the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow. Between now and April, Ilya Bryzgalov needs to play more consistently. He has the career credentials to be better than he has been and needs to fully assume his number 1 goaltender status.

Phillies

An interesting story on csnphilly.com about the Phillies having had discussions with New York Yankees free agent Jorge Posada.

It appears that he was an option, but no longer is because of the players who have been signed since the offseason began.
