Joe Paterno to retire, Flyers, & Phillies

TY to over ---850,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Penn State -

News today that Joe Paterno will retire creates a compromise between those who believed he should have been made to leave now and others who want to allow him to have the appearance of control over his own fate.

Flyers -

Pronger might be back as the team heads to Tampa.

Whether he returns tonight, or later in the week, his presence will help to steady a defense that has looked similar to last spring's playoff corp.

Phillies -

Madson might be nearing a deal, with Papelbon as a fall back. (Or vice versa.)

In any regard, Amaro's changes regarding the starting lineup will decide if this team can be a legit contender next season.

Eagles loss + Flyers getting back to business

TY to over ---850,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Eagles -

The loss to the Bears on Monday Night Football was a tough one to swallow.

The increasingly difficult road to any possible playoff chance is set now.

If the team doesn't make the playoffs, strong organizational change seems likely.

Flyers -

The Flyers are expecting both Chris Pronger and Matt Read back this week.

Pronger's veteran leadership and Read's rookie input highlight a nice mix on this year's squad filled with players that are similar to both.

Flyers notes + Phillies hot stove speculation

TY to over ---850,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

The Flyers have a winning record and have the top offense in the NHL. But, they have also played erratically.

It is difficult to imagine that a team that rebuilt 1/2 of it's team could seriously contend for the Stanley Cup this season.

As fans, with reality in mind, hoping for a winning season, a playoff berth and a respectable showing in next spring's playoffs would be progress.

Phillies -

With Jim Thome back in the fold, other additions can be expected within the next few months.

Drip by drip, or within a few big flashes, everyone will know just how different the 2012 squad will be then the 2011 one.

If the Phillies want to contend for a World Series championship, they will need to add a number of offensive parts to the overall lineup/bench.

Flyers wrinkle the Jackets & Thome speaks about Cuddyer

TY to over ---840,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

The Flyers crushing defeat of a weakened Blue Jackets team had as much to do with the Columbus' talent level and vast number of injuries, as it did Philadelphia's potent offense.

Teams like Columbus, who has the lowest point total in the NHL, don't come along every day.

Phillies -

Renewed Phillie Jim Thome was asked about his former Twins' teammate Michael Cuddyer (an outfielder/infielder) at his press conference.

Based on a lot of earlier reporting of the Phillies summer interest in both Thome and Cuddyer, it would not be surprising if the team is also able to reach an agreement with him.

Thome Part 2 & Flyers notes

TY to over ---840,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Jim Thome adds character and class to the Phillies locker room.

He has enough left in his bat to pop some home runs when he occasionally starts and when he pinch hits.

This is a cool reunion story that has the ability to play out very well.

Flyers -

Jeff Carter sat in the press box due to his injury during the Flyers 9-2 win over his Blue Jackets team.

He had to be wondering how many years he was going to be stuck in hockey purgatory.

I wonder if he will eventually be traded elsewhere, if he doesn't produce as well as expected?

Jim Thome stars in the Phillies produced Cliff Lee sequel

TY to over ---830,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Jim Thome signing is a nice move to add a power bat and an old friend.

Very cool to see him want to come back and for them to want him back.

Certainly not in the Cliff Lee return category, in terms of what he can do on the field for the team. But, his character and ability to hit some home runs should help the team.

A feel good story for sure.

Flyers notes & Phillies hot stove

TY to over ---830,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Flyers -

Last night's game against the Devils might be replayed at various points this season. When your roster is filled with numerous new players it can be difficult to maintain a consistent approach.

The other factor is injuries. Any team that has someone like Chris Pronger out of the lineup will be affected in some way.

This Flyers squad looks to have promise, but at this point it certainly is not an elite contender. It would not be realistic to expect them to be so. Flyers fans are being realistic about seasonal prospects for success come April.

Phillies -

After the NLDS situation, this might feel like a longer offseason than last year.

The Cliff Lee Christmas gift understandably made everyone believe that good days were ahead. And they were until mid-September.

Amaro has his work cut out for him in a hot stove season that might be a turning point in this teams future. That's a turning point that could lead in a number of directions, not just up.

Phillies free agents + Flyers - Sabres - Devils

TY to over ---830,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Today, begins the free agent frenzy.

The most recent teams rumored to be interested in Jimmy Rollins are the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and...wait for it...the Washington Nationals.

Ryan Madson is also rumored to be courted by the Nats.

Imagine Phillies part 2 in DC with Werth, Rollins and Madson.  Oh my.

Flyers -

The Flyers played a nice game against a good defensive Sabres team.

Don't forget they were shorthanded, as Pronger, Schenn, Briere and Read did not play.

Jagr continued to look just great on the ice.

Bryzgalov might be settling down in the net. He doesn't look totally comfortable, but was steady enough to help his team win.

The Philly pressure cooker is certainly to continue to cook his casserole.

Next up is the Devils at home on Thursday.

Placido Polanco's Gold Glove & Flyers shuffle off to Buffalo

TY to over ---830,000 readers--- of my Yahoo Sports, Interview and News articles since 2/1/11.http://contributor.yahoo.com/user/977720/sean_obrien.html

Phillies -

Placido Polanco's Gold Glove award came as somewhat of a surprise. It's not because he isn't thought of as a great defender. Instead, it's because his injury-marred season was the top 'Polly' story this season.

With one year left on his contract, it will be interesting to see how the Phillies handle their third base slot in 2012.

Flyers -

The Flyers trip to Buffalo might be an interesting early season test.

The Sabres have one of the better defenses in the NHL, while the Flyers are one of the League's top scoring franchises.

The orange and black need to settle into a smoother flow of play if they hope to win consistently. Facing a team that plays good defense might force them to do that tonight.
